Tech companies such as Tencent, Alibaba and Baidu are very profitable. I don't think the Chinese govt is trying to clamp down on them. Rather, China is now at a stage where things have to be more regulated to protect the interest of consumers.
Even my relatives' illegally built house on a rural land in Guangdong had to be demolished recently. Also on the crackdown recently is scam calls and illegal fund transfer.

They have to prevent important data from being falling into the hands of foreign countries.
