Canadian robber of StanChart bank heist will not be caned, Singapore gave assurance to Britain to secure extradition

David James Roach, the Canadian sentenced to five years' jail and six strokes of the cane for robbing a bank of more than $30,000 in 2016, has been spared the cane.

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) said on Sunday (July 25) that Roach, who committed the Standard Chartered Bank robbery which took place on July 7, 2016, had his sentence of caning remitted on Saturday.

This is because the Singapore Government had assured Britain that any corporal sentence on Roach, who had fled Singapore, would not be carried out in order to secure his extradition.

Knnah what kind of extradition deal is this? Can asked for no canning then hand the criminal to us. Next time they will demand no imprisonment of the crook of he is British........

5 years jail are bad enough.  Got used weapons and any one got  hurt during the roberry?  If have then must cane.

It's okay lah. Treat his waiver from caning as a discount for his extra jail time. This cockroach spent nearly two years in a Thai+UK jail for nothing.

In the 80s we understand their presence is important to us and we have limited choice but to accept their supremacy. Today, this law should be update liao.. otherwise we may invite more of such act in the future.

In lieu of caning should impose heavier jail sentence.

Yes, for $30,000, needs to serve 5 years prison term. But he is spared the caning, perhaps he did not use any weapon in the robbery..
