This astonishing photograph shows the smiling Nazi leader embracing the young Jewish girl who became known as 'the Führer's child' because of her close friendship with Hitler that lasted from 1933 to 1938. One of her grandmothers was Jewish and Hitler knew this.

Another shot shows Rosa helping Hitler with his ties as he holds arms in the garden of his Alpine retreat. She stayed in touch with Hitler by writing letters to his aid Whilhem Bruckner. In one letter dated September 27, 1936, she wrote: 'Dear Uncle Brückner! Today I have a lot to tell you. I am already working on some christmas socks for Uncle Hitler because I asked him if they fit him last year. He said yes!

On Tuesday, Alexander Historical Auctions, based in Chesapeake City, Md., sold one of those photographs for $11,520. The black-and-white, 11¾” x 9½ image, taken by Heinrich Hoffmann, shows a smiling Hitler embracing the young blond girl, Rosa Bernile Nienau, about 6, in 1933 at his mountainside retreat, the Berghof, in the Bavarian region of Germany. Hitler’s face is turned to his right, dipping to the top of her head, while she’s looking directly at the camera, her mouth open, eyes lit up, and grinning widely. Most notably perhaps, the photograph is inscribed by Hitler himself in dark blue ink.
