London | COVID-19 case numbers are gathering steam in free-living Britain, raising fears of a coming hospital overload and potential mutant strains - and prompting calls for more booster jabs and vaccinations for the young.

The number of confirmed coronavirus cases logged on Monday surged to 49,156, the highest since England exited lockdown in mid-July.
