It is the way the movie is directed and filmed. They made used of shadows, quiet corners, haunted buildings, etc. to keep the audience in suspense, then suddenly a ghost appeared from the dark shadow corner when you least expect. This can make people jump out of shock.

No doubt HK movie companies no choice tag with them but usually HK side they only allow roughly 1 to 3 max PRC artists tag with their HK actors.
