British authorities arrested former Russian-appointed head of occupied Sevastopol, Dmitry Ovsyannikov, in London on Jan. 22, the Times reported. He is suspected of violating sanctions laws. A long-time Russian official, Ovsyannikov was appointed so-called governor of occupied Sevastopol in 2017 following Russia's illegal annexation of Crimea.

He held the post until July 2019, before becoming the deputy minister of industry and trade. Ovsyannikov was later dismissed from this position by Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin in April 2020, allegedly due to a scandal involving indecent behavior at the Izhevsk airport.

Now, the former Russian official is accused of deliberately violating sanctions by opening a Halifax Bank of Scotland account in London. According to the Times, he is also accused of allowing four payments totaling over $82,621 to be deposited in the account and of possessing $98,531 of "criminal cash."

The U.K. placed Ovsyannikov on the sanctions list, where he is still listed, at the end of 2020.

The Ukrainian govt has informed White House that it plans to fire the country’s top military commander overseeing war against Russian occupation forces. The move to oust Ukrainian General Valery Zaluzhny, who has clashed with President Volodymyr over military strategy and other issues, follows a Ukrainian counteroffensive last year that failed to recover significant amounts of Russian-held territory.

A source close to Zelenskiy’s is claiming the pair have also disagreed over a new military mobilization drive, with the president opposing Zaluzhny’s proposal to call up 500,000 fresh troops..

Russia altering demographics in occupied areas by bringing in Russians, Kazakhs, Belarusians04.02.2024

The invaders approved a new program, which provides for the mass resettlement of residents of Russia, Kazakhstan, and Belarus to the occupied territories of Zaporizhzhia region.
Mayor of Melitopol in exile, Ivan Fedorov, said this on the air of the national telethon, Ukrinform reports.

"The enemy has approved a new program involving a mass resettlement of Russian citizens to the temporarily occupied territory. Currently, they seek citizens from different parts of Kazakhstan and Belarus to come to there," he said.

The plot continues to thicken over the presence of U.S. journalist Tucker Carlson in Moscow, with pro-Kremlin media trying to track his movements around Russia's capital.

With speculation rife over Carlson's reasons for being in Russia — there are rumors that he could be in the country to interview President Vladimir Putin — Russian state media reported late Wednesday that the car allegedly being used by the former Fox News host had been spotted leaving the president's office.

In other news, a new standoff has emerged at the Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in southern Ukraine.

Around 100 of the thousands of Ukrainian staff at the ZNPP are refusing to sign contracts with Russian nuclear company Rosatom, U.N. nuclear watchdog chief Rafael Grossi told a French radio station on Tuesday.

Grossi told the French radio station in an interview that he would examine any impact on operations at the plant, where the six reactors are in shutdown, when he visits it on Wednesday.

Erdogan, Putin to discuss Ukraine and grain deal during Turkey visit -minister.

ANKARA - Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin will discuss the war in Ukraine and the Black Sea Grain Initiative during a visit to Ankara by the Russian leader, Turkey's foreign minister said on Tuesday.

Hakan Fidan did not give a date for the trip, which would mark Putin's first trip to a NATO member state since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. A Turkish official told Reuters last week he would visit Turkey on Feb. 12.

Ankara has sought to persuade Russia to return to the Black Sea Grain Initiative - brokered by Turkey and the United Nations - that ensured the safe export of Ukrainian grain during the war via the Black Sea. Russia withdrew from the accord in July 2023 and has said it was not interested in reviving it.

BLACK SEA -- Black Sea Successes and Ukraine’s Path to Victory. February 5, 2024. Ukraine’s operational success in the Northwestern Black Sea offers a beacon of light for Western support, could chart the way to eventual victory over Russia.

Predictably Black Sea Grain Initiative, facilitated by UN and Turkey, collapsed after Russian obstruction and its ultimate destruction by the Kremlin in July, followed by a renewed drone and missile campaign against Ukrainian port infrastructure. Russia struck the historic heart of Odesa too.Yet Ukraine pushed back forcefully at Russia’s attempt to resume its blockade and opened a unilateral maritime corridor that hugged the shore all the way to NATO territory.
While this corridor started with mostly outward traffic, it has substantially increased shipment volumes, reaching close to 20 million tons of agricultural and non-agricultural cargoes in its first six months, thus nearing pre-war levels. It is on course to surpass the numbers achieved under the grain deal, which saw some 30 million tons transported annually, but which also gave Russia de facto boycott powers.

How did this happen?
Ukraine organized a highly effective military campaign against Russian targets in Crimea and the Black Sea Fleet. This combined Ukrainian audacity with a mix of domestic and Western capabilities, including drones and long-range Anglo-French cruise missiles. This sustained campaign, a continuation of Ukraine’s 2022 operations, which saw the sinking of flagship Moskva & recovery of Snake Island in 2022, intensified last summer with several successful. It led to destruction of Black Sea Fleet HQ in Sevastopol as senior commanders held a planning meeting & some 20% of the fleet, early August, drones traveled 800km (500 miles) to hit Russian ship near Novorossiysk, in Northeast Black Sea, where a growing number of Russian vessels were seeking safety. Kyiv said Russian ports were considered a military threat, potentially disrupting its exports too.

The result is that Russian naval vessels are no longer safe, as sinking of missile corvette Ivanovets on Jan 31 underlined. So Kremlin’s grip on Ukraine Black Sea’s international waters has loosened, much of the international community stood idle in the face of Russian threats against international navigation and food security, Kyiv called the Kremlin’s bluff and restored order. At the same time, the improvement of air defense in the region has seen Ukraine bringing down Russian aircraft in the South — including three Su-34 bombers in a missile ambush — a deterrent to Moscow’s aerial campaigns.

As a result, while Ukraine’s land counteroffensive faltered in the fall, it now holds the initiative in the Northern Black Sea and can claim operational success in sea warfare.

There are key lessons to be drawn from this.

A RUSSIAN colonel has been shot in the head by his own side as he was gunned down by troops working for One of Vladimir Putin's warlords.

Lieutenant Colonel Albert Atmurzaev, 39, was killed by national guards loyal to Putin's close ally Ramzan Kadyrov, the warlord leader of Chechnya, according to reports. The colonel (circled) was shot dead after refusing to stop his car in Grozny, Chechnya.

The shooting was in Grozny, capital of Chechnya, where Kadyrov is reported to be gathering a vast “private army” ostensibly for use supporting the dictator in the war in Ukraine.

Reports say Atmurzaev - a Russian interior ministry officer - drove past Akhmat-Arena stadium when the guardsmen flagged him to stop. After failing to halt, two warning shots were fired into air, before aim was then taken at Atmurzaev, he was shot in the head.

The wounded colonel was rushed to hospital but doctors could not save him.

Some Republicans aren’t happy with House leadership after the lower chamber failed to impeach Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas and failed to pass a clean $17.6 billion Israel aid bill all in one day.

“Getting rid of Speaker McCarthy has officially turned into an unmitigated disaster,” Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) said on X. “All work on separate spending bills has ceased. Spending reductions have been traded for spending increases. Warrantless spying has been temporarily extended. Our majority has shrunk.”

After Republicans built their case for months to impeach Mayorkas, they failed in a 214-216 vote Tuesday after four Republicans sided with Democrats. The public setback underscores the deep divisions within the conference, exacerbated by their thin majority.

Minutes after the impeachment vote failed, the measure to aid Israel in its war against Hamas went down 250-180 — failing to gather the two-thirds support required for passage. Nearly four dozen Democrats voted yes while more than a dozen Republicans opposed the measure.

“This is nothing short of embarrassing,” said Brittany Martinez, a former spokesperson for Kevin McCarthy. “With such a slim majority, two back-to-back failed votes signal that Leadership doesn’t have a hold of their Conference.” House Speaker Mike Johnson was elected in late October after three other candidates failed to gain control of the gavel and McCarthy was ousted weeks prior.

Anyway, U.S. sink / fail 2x to pass the aid bill for Israel & Ukraine... Sick

A FORMER British army colonel who has stared into the eyes of Zelensky's new commander-in-chief dubbed "Snow Leopard" knows Ukraine is in safe hands. Richard Kemp told The Sun that battle-hardened General Oleksandr Syrskyi will stop at nothing to defend the war-weary nation against the new Russian onslaught. Ukraine's new commander-in-chief Colonel-General Oleksandr Syrskyi - a hardened warrior who has overseen most of Ukraine's major battlefield victoriesCredit: Avalon.red

On Thursday, President Zelensky confirmed he his sacked Ukraine's hugely popular commander-in-chief of the country's armed forces, Valerii Zaluzhnyi in favour of Syrskyi.....And Ukraine gears up to face a renewed Russian offensive as the war drags painfully towards its third year, Kemp believes he is the "forceful commander" it needs.

Colonel Kemp said: "Like predecessor Zaluzhnyi, will devote every new to his country’s defence." It followed months of rumours of a potential rift growing between the president and his hugely popular Gen Zaluzhnyi, who had led Ukraine's military since before the war. Last week, Zelensky revealed he was considering replacing a number of senior off in his war cabinet, stating: "A reset is necessary."

Announcing his decision yesterday, he declared high command needed to be "renewed" but Zaluzhnyi could "remain on the team". The embattled leader thanked his military chief for defending Ukraine and said they had a "frank conversation" about the changes needed in the army. Keir Giles, senior fellow at Chatham House's Russia programme, told The Sun: "It was a very bold move."

Ukraine aid package clears key procedural vote in US Senate. WASHINGTON: A sweeping US foreign aid package, including US$60 billion for Ukraine, passed a key procedural vote Sunday (Feb 11), although opposition from right-wing Republicans may block it from becoming law.

The US$95 billion package includes funding for Israel's fight against Hamas militants and for key strategic ally Taiwan, but the lion's share would help pro-Western Ukraine restock depleted ammunition supplies, weapons and other crucial needs as it enters a third year of war.

The Senate, which has a very slim Democratic majority, voted 67-27 to break a procedural hold placed on the bill, making it almost certain it will pass a final simple-majority vote around midweek.

It is unusual for the Senate to hold votes on the weekend, with Sunday's session also coinciding with the all-important NFL championship game.

"I can't remember the last time the Senate was in session on Super Bowl Sunday, but as I've said all week long, we're going to keep working on this bill until the job is done," Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said before the vote.

Ukraine intelligence ‘confirms’ Russia used Starlink terminals, which provide high-speed communications, have been vital in giving Ukraine’s military an edge over invading Russian troops.

Ukrainian intelligence said it has confirmed that Russian forces are using satellite internet service Starlink on the battlefield in occupied areas in the east of the country.

Releasing what it said on Sunday was proof, Ukraine’s military intelligence said it has confirmed earlier reports that of the “systemic” use by Russian troops of terminals of Elon Musk’s satellite communications system. Starlink systems have been vital for Ukraine‘s battlefield communications in Russia’s nearly two-year-old invasion as Kyiv has faced a larger and better-equipped military.

The personal control of Starlink by the US billionaire, who has regularly repeated Kremlin talking points regarding the conflict, remains a concern for Kyiv and its allies.

1st Confirmed Loss Of HIMARS — US ‘Flies Back’ 2 Damaged High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems For Repairs, two lightly damaged High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS) have been transported back to the US for repairs.

The weapon was responsible for achieving success in forcing Russia to make a tactical withdrawal from a part of Kherson in November 2022. Ukraine began targetting Moscow’s supply lines and logistical nodes deep in the rear. Subsequently, the weapon appeared sparingly in military videos, while Russia reported rising shoot downs of HIMARS rockets with its Buk and Tor surface-to-air missiles (SAM). Interestingly, reports challenged Russian claim destroying HIMARS launchers, saying all of the 39 systems are intact.

This was b'cos HIMARS crews’ secret, well-concealed movements & disciplined tactics to change locations after firing volleys. Russian artillery & air defense crews struggled to detect HIMARS & coordinate fire.

Ukraine’s HIMARS vex Russian occupiers. In one recent series of strikes – one among many – the nimble launchers knocked out three Russian howitzers, a quartet of rocket launchers, & an air-defense vehicle,” analysis Forbes said.

Therefore, the emergence of pictures and videos of damage challenges the claim, proving the system has a mere tactical impact on the battlefield. It is also vulnerable as a whole, besides its rockets.

HIMARS Trucks Transported To US For Repairs
Handle ‘War. VehicleTracker’ posted a picture on X (formerly Twitter), showing a HIMARS launching vehicle being loaded onto a cargo aircraft.

“The first confirmed loss of a US-supplied M142 HIMARs MLRS, in the process of being loaded into an An-124 Ruslan. It seems to have suffered Shrapnel Damage but no direct hit, luckily. It will now be going to the US for repairs,” the handle said in the post.

HIMARS Recent Hits On Russian Targets
Ukraine officially released a video on February 14 of a HIMARS from its 14th Regiment destroying a Russian Buk air defense system “into molecules” in a strike that was carried out with “fire adjustment.”

Another video posted by the handle ‘Ukrainian Front’ shows the weapon system struck a Russian 4320 Ural truck and two Kamaz 5350 ‘Mustang’ vehicles in the Radensk, Kherson region village.

Two other videos from earlier this month only show the HIMARS firing and not striking any targets. The handle of United24, a Ukrainian government-backed media, and crowd-funding platform, posted a news clip showing access to a Ukrainian HIMARS unit.

The presenter said the M142 HIMARS “changed the course of the war in Ukraine at some point” and “continues to destroy targets at a strategic level.”

He challenged Russian media claims, saying, “None of the (HIMARS) systems have been destroyed…zero…thanks to its high mobility.” The “enemy artillery” is “just incapable” of spotting it, suggesting a quick ‘shoot and scoot’ tactic with HIMARS by Ukrainian soldiers – accurate to its intended design and orientation.

Handle, show 2-HIMARS trucks observing “shrapnel damage, first” HIMARS truck shows small visible incisions on rear right-hand side of rocket carrier & some hits on window. 2nd HIMARs is mine damage to the left tire, back of cabin, PSU & HULIU panels,” (It's right tire wheel). A longer video showed An-124 arriving at Harrisburg airport in Pennsylvania is off loading 2-HIMARS. One HIMARS is offloaded onto back of civilian truck rear cargo hold b4 driving off. The front airframe around cockpit too ‘folds up’ to reveal other loading point a signature feature of the An-124. Other truck pulls up b4 rear hold 2nd HIMARS with damaged front right wheel is lowered onto it with pulley cables. Interestingly 3-military vehicles – two trucks and a HUMVEE – with medium-size box containers on their carriers drive into An-124 from front ramp, possibly being unidentified military cargo. Another cargo that climbed onto the An-124 was HUMVEE and a civilian-wheeled crane.

An-124 then closes its front section b4 taxing to take off. It's unclear where military cargo was bound for whether Ukraine or any Euro country of U.S.

Ukraine intelligence ‘confirms’ Russia used Starlink terminals, to provide high-speed communications, have been vital in giving their military an edge over invading Ukraine troops. This is latest news...

Ukrainian intelligence said it has confirmed Russian forces are using satellite internet service Starlink on their battlefield in occupied areas in the east of the country.

Releasing what it said on Sunday was proof, Ukraine’s military intelligence said it has confirmed earlier reports Russia “systemic” use by Russian troops for their terminals for Elon Musk’s satellite communications system.
The personal control of Starlink by the US billionaire, who has regularly repeated Kremlin talking points regarding the conflict, remains a concern for Kyiv and its allies.

Russia Buying Musk’s Starlink Systems in Arab Countries, Ukraine Says

Audio recording allegedly captures Russian soldiers discussing how to obtain the satellite internet system.

Ukrainian officials presented fresh claims Russian forces are using satellite internet terminals made by Elon Musk’s SpaceX, day after billionaire expressed skepticism -- Ukraine could prevail in the war with Russia.

Russian forces have purchased satellite internet terminals made by SpaceX in Arab countries and used them at the front line, according to Ukrainian officials, potentially undercutting a major battlefield advantage for Kyiv’s army.

While in a forum on his social-media platform X, Musk said Monday, “there's no way in hell” Russian President Putin could lose the war on Ukraine.

On Tuesday, Ukraine’s military-intelligence agency, known as HUR, posted an audio recording online that it said was intercepted from Russian radio communications. In the recording, two men can be heard speaking in Russian about how to get Starlink, SpaceX’s satellite internet system.

Ukraine says it has sunk another warship

Ukraine claims it has now disabled a third of Russia’s Black Sea Fleet off coast of Crimea on Wednesday.
Russia’s landing ship Caesar Kunikov was attacked with “MAGURA” V5 drones that punctured “critical holes” on its left side b4 sinking, the Ukrainian military intelligence agency that aligns with Ukrainian claims last wk, disabled about 33% of Russia’s warships, amounting to 24 disabled ships & a submarine. The landing ship Caesar Kunikov would be 25th disabled according to Ukraine’s count. Wednesday’s attack was conducted by agency’s “Group 13” special forces co-operation with Ukraine’s security & defense forces.

Night-time footage provided showed sea drone racing toward Caesar Kunikov, b4 huge plume of smoke rose from vessel. “Ministry of Defense statements military colleagues say nothing, anything about this,” Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said in a news briefing.
Wednesday’s attack is the latest in a series of Ukrainian strikes on Russia’s navy, as it tries to land both strategic and symbolic blows against Russian forces that annexed Crimea in 2014.

As Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine nears its 2nd anniversary, the frontlines have for mths remained mostly static since last year. Ukraine has pivoted on Black Sea strikes on Crimea and Russian ships are intended to isolate peninsula & make it more difficult for Russia to sustain its military ops on the Ukrainian mainland.

When asked about the incident in a Brussels press conference on Wednesday, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said broadly. Ukrainians have been able to inflict heavy losses on Russian Black Sea Fleet,” & is “great achievement, great victory for Ukrainians.” The NATO chief also noted that the fact that Ukraine’s armed forces have pushed away the Russian Black Sea fleet and opened a corridor has allowed them to export grain and other commodities to the world market.

“Few believe this was possible just a few months ago. But now actually, the export of grain from Ukraine takes place even without an agreement with Russia. So this shows that the skills and the competence of the Ukrainian Armed Forces,” Stoltenberg said, adding that this is a result of the Ukraine’s forces skill set but that also NATO’s support has been important.

Ukraine already slated to receive F-16 lightweight fighters from several European countries.

However, F-18 falls into a expensive, medium-weight class of fighters, developed with a twin-engine to provides a longer range. Ukraine is not Interestingly, a senior official in Ukrainian Air Force rejected offer, referring to F-18 as “airborne junk”. A info published in Australian Financial Review as F/A-18, it hadn’t been for such action, these aircraft could be patrolling Ukrainian airspace right now.

MiG-29 Clapping ,not F-18Despite rejecting F-18, Ukraine welcomed a significant number, MiG-29 from various Eastern European countries, widely utilized in combat, typically perceived as F-18’s closest Eastern-bloc counterpart, produced by the former USSR and subsequently Russia.

Interestingly, Australian F-18s & MiG-29s from Europe have notably comparable service lives. However, MiGs come with substantial benefits, including superior climb rates, thrust-weight ratios, operational altitudes, speeds, and access to R-73 missiles with helmet-mounted sights, paving the way for high off-boresight targeting.

Upon comparison, both MiG-29 & F-16 emerge as far more successful aircraft than the F-18. Even today, they remain in limited-scale production for export, whereas the F-18 — despite being a newer design — was discontinued 24 years ago, back in 2000.

F-16 replaces for F-18? (Yes)
Final F-18 Hornets U.S. Navy were replaced for F-16s?, still a handful still serve in U.S. Marine Corps. Something to note F-18, it’s essentially a derivative of YF-17 design, U.S. turned down in 1975, favoring F-16. YF-17 itself significantly design is for F-5 fighter, a model saw old service in 1961 Vietnam WarU.S. Navy F-18 primarily due to dual enginecrucially reduced risk of crashes, a fundamental requirement for aircraft carrier operations.

Service history, F-18 faced two types of foreign fighters in air-to-air combat — Soviet MiG-21 & MiG-25, flown by Iraqi Air Force. F-18 emerged victorious in both encounters with former, while it did not succeed in its lone engagement with the latter.
