F-16 replaces for F-18? (Yes)

Final F-18 Hornets U.S. Navy were replaced for F-16s?, still a handful still serve in U.S. Marine Corps. Something to note F-18, it’s essentially a derivative of YF-17 design, U.S. turned down in 1975, favoring F-16.

YF-17 itself significantly design is for F-5 fighter, a model saw old service in 1961 Vietnam War. U.S. Navy F-18 primarily due to dual enginecrucially reduced risk of crashes, a fundamental requirement for aircraft carrier operations.... Tongue Bigeyes

Service history, F-18 faced two types of foreign fighters in air-to-air combat — Soviet MiG-21 & MiG-25, flown by Iraqi Air Force. F-18 emerged victorious in both encounters with former, while it did not succeed in its lone engagement with the latter.

Ukrainians in Avdiivka both withdrawing from & reclaiming positions – Ops Strategic Group.

The Tavriia Operational Strategic Group emphasised there is an ebb & flow of Ukrainian units in Avdiivka, situation there is tense dynamic, but under control.
Dmytro Lykhovii, spokesperson of Tavriia Operational Strategic Group, on air of national 24/7 newscast

"The situation remains very tense but under control. From 18:00 on Wednesday until 06:00 on Thursday on the Avdiivka front, as Russians suffered personnel losses of 208 soldiers, their casualties outnumbering ours 20 to 1 (ratio of occupiers’ irreversible losses on the Avdiivka front to their losses on three other fronts under the responsibility of the Tavriia Operational Strategic Group), In Avdiivka, units are manoeuvring, sometimes withdrawing to more advantageous positions & sometimes repelling enemy advances.
supply & evacuation for Avdiivka has become challenging, but an alternative logistics route, prepared in advance, has been activated....Each unit is aware of its manoeuvre, and each has its own task. The overall plan [becomes clearer as operations progress], forming dynamically. Contingency plans and combat actions are decided based on the situation.

It's clear where enemy wants to enter. They aim to advance west of Avdiivka Coke & Chemical Plant. There, they encounter worthy resistance. The statistic regarding dead Russians, which I mentioned, is the result of successfully implementing the vision and a sign that situation is controlled in terms of the overall theatre of operations on the Avdiivka front."

In urban warfare currently taking place in Avdiivka, & a earlier, command reported is prepare to backup supply routes to city if Russian forces obstruct primary logistical route. While the Third Separate Assault Brigade reported 2-Russian brigades were critically damaged on Avdiivka front, as situation in Avdiivka remains precarious, with Russians moving new forces to the city.

Updated: In a comment to Ukrainska Pravda, Lykhovii specified that 20:1 is the ratio of the occupiers’ irreversible losses on the Avdiivka front to their losses on three other fronts under the responsibility of the Tavriia Operational Strategic Group.

Tavriiaka Operational Strategic Group has explained why it is important to hold Avdiivka and stressed that in the most difficult circumstances battlefield, soldiers’ lives are the priority."Holding Avdiivka is important in order to prevent Russian artillery and Russian terror from moving further to the west of Donetsk Oblast. To grind down Russian resources and reserves, to deplete their armada, added that of 14 February, military units formations of the 1st Army Corps, 2nd and 8th Armies and 41st Army Corps of the Russian Armed Forces were fighting against Ukrainian Defence Forces on the Avdiivka front. Lykhovii said that Russian army has a political objective to capture at least one city before the presidential elections in Russia in March.

"And it should be understood many settlements to the west of Avdiivka may become second Mariupol, a second Bakhmut & a second Bucha.

All Ukraine folks must help all Ukrainians to join Armed Forces and support mobilisation, and donate to the Armed Forces." On 15 February, 3rd Separate Assault Brigade confirmed it had urgently redeployed to reinforce Ukrainian troops on Avdiivka front as reported Ukrainian defenders were "fighting 360 degrees" & that, the Russians were deploying new forces to Avdiivka.

To better protect Ukraine. All Ukrainians must support their army. Like the timing of sinking of Russian amphibious ship, the Caesar Kunikov by Ukraine is significant as it was an important logistical ship, Commander of the Commander of the Estonian Nav Jüri Saska said on Wednesday. It is "remarkable" that Russia let such an important vessel sail alone, he said. Saska said that amphibious ships and other logistical bases moving in the Black Sea are a target for Ukraine.

"There's certainly a lot of luck, also very clearly targets being chased, and those are, if you look at the pattern.

This ships are providing logistical support has also come out into media saying this ships carry upto 500 tonnes of ammunition, b'cos these are very important sea bridges for Russians themselves to supply front," he said.

Saska said Caesar Kunikov was part of the logistical chain and supplied Russian units on the front line in Ukraine. "That's why this is a big loss for Russia, no doubt. It can take 500 tons of ammunition, food and whatever else is needed on the front, and Russians don't have too many of those ships.

It will take up to five years to rebuild and to build one of these ships, the conditions Russia is in at the moment, it's not so likely they will be rebuilt. Of course, this is a great loss," he explained.

While, Estonian firm BWB leading EU autonomous warship prototype development. Commander said it is not currently possible to send new ships to the Black Sea. "That's why it's actually quite remarkable such a large base, a logistically very important base, moved alone," he added.

Sea drone attacks are difficult to spot because they move in the dark and, due to the cold water, cannot be seen by the ship's infrared cameras, he said.

"The drone comes in the dark. /.../ And you're looking with an infrared camera, you're observing around, you're scanning the surface, these ships are not very well equipped with devices like thermal imaging is essentially non-existent, they're in cold water, probably been there for a long time."

Ukraine's armed forces said the ship had been sunk on Wednesday morning, the BBC reported.

Pavel: Czechia can deliver 800,000 shells to Ukraine if allied financing secured. Czech President Petr Pavel (L) and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky meet during the Munich Security Conference on Feb. 17, 2024

Czechia identified around 800,000 artillery shells abroad that could be sent to Ukraine within weeks if provided funding from other partners, Czech President Petr Pavel said on Feb. 17.

Artillery shells are among the most crucial military supplies for Kyiv, as they are used daily in high numbers on the Ukrainian battlefields.

EU conceded it would be able to deliver only half of the promised 1 million shells by March deadline, defense assistance from U.S., including artillery support, is held up by domestic political disputes,  EU's top diplomat, recently said that EU aims to deliver more than 1 million shells to Ukraine by the end of 2024. "We have identified at this point half a million rounds of 155 mm caliber and another 300,000 rounds of 122 mm caliber, which we will be able to deliver within weeks if we quickly find funding for that activity," Pavel said at the Munich Security Conference.

Czech head of state said Prague will turn to partners from U.S., Germany, Sweden, and others who could contribute to this endeavor. Pavel did not specify from which countries the purchases would be sourced.

Bloomberg: Umerov says Ukraine has increasingly ‘critical’ shortage of artillery shells As the EU countries sent all the shells they could from their standing stocks, the next step is to either produce or purchase new ones, both to ship to Ukraine and to refill their own arsenals.

Seeing the EU failing on its promise to Kyiv, Czechia has begun pushing a plan to jointly finance the purchase of 450,000 shells outside the bloc, Politico reported on Feb. 1. Prague reportedly suggested that Europe could turn to arms companies in South Korea, Turkey, or South Africa....

Plans to buy ammunition from outside the bloc continue to face opposition from France, Greece, and Cyprus. While Paris hopes to give a boost to its domestic defense industry, Greece and Cyprus do not wish to buy arms from Turkish producers, given their tense relations with Ankara

Source: Bucha mayor. Quote from Fedoruk: "A missile attack on Bucha hromada. (A hromada is an administrative unit designating a town, village or several villages and their adjacent territories.)

The blast wave left houses in Babyntsi and Vorzel settlements without roofs and windows. Some of the buildings have their supporting structures damaged. In total, about four dozen houses were damaged. An enemy missile was shot down outside the settlement, so a crater was the only consequence. Relevant services are working there."

Ukraine: Day 726. Russia pushes further advances after fall of Avdiivka; Denmark will give Ukraine all its artillery, PM ‘we don’t use it at the moment’.

Russian troops launched multiple attacks to the west of just-captured Avdiivka in a bid for more gains, a Ukrainian army spokesperson said on Sunday. Kyiv also announced it had opened a war crimes investigation after two separate reports of Russian troops shooting captured Ukrainian soldiers emerged. Russia has said some Ukrainian troops remain at the Avdiivka coking coal plant. As Ukraine Facing manpower and ammunition shortages, Ukraine was forced to withdraw from Avdiivka in the eastern Donetsk region, handing Moscow its first major territorial gain since May last year. “Enemy is trying to actively develop its offensive,” Dmytro Lykhoviy, a spokesperson for Ukrainian army commander leading Kyiv’s troops in the area.

Ukraine’s general staff reported 14 failed Russian attacks on the village of Lastochkyne, around 2km (one mile) to the west of Avdiivka’s northern edge. “But our considerable forces are entrenched there.”

Russian troops "are taking advantage of the delays in helping Ukraine," Zelensky added, highlighting shortages of artillery, frontline air defence and longer-range weapons.

- New towns threatened -

Ukrainian commanders had predicted that Russia would move troops from Avdiivka to other parts of the frontline.

And Ukrainian troops said they were facing "heavy fire" from advancing Russian forces in the southern Zaporizhzhia region.

Senior commander Oleksandr Tarnavsky said Russia was launching multiple attacks near the village of Robotyne -- one of the few places where Ukraine regained ground during a counter-offensive last year.

"These offensive attempts are being halted, the enemy is being eliminated in the outskirts of Robotyne," Tarnavsky said in a post on Telegram.

Reports from Russian military bloggers had earlier said Moscow's forces were in the southern edges of the village.

Like many settlements across eastern Ukraine, Robotyne has been completely flattened by months of artillery fire.

Now towns like Selydove, 30 kilometres (20 miles) from Avdiivka, fear they could be next in line for a Russian offensive. Increasing numbers of Selydove residents are leaving the town, inhabitants said.

US President Joe Biden told Zelensky on Sunday that he was "confident" the Republican-dominated US Congress would approve the critically needed aid.

Biden has said another Ukrainian town could fall to Russia without the aid.

- Border tensions -

Ukraine also faces a different frontier assault with Polish farmers and truckers trying to block the border, accusing Ukrainian counterparts of undermining their business.

Polish farmers are calling for a halt to all border traffic on Tuesday as they step up a battle with their government over their conditions.

The row has strained relations between the neighbours, even though Poland has been one of Ukraine's staunchest supporters since Russia invaded in February 2022.

"Things that are happening on our western border, the border with Poland, cannot be considered normal or ordinary," Zelensky said, adding the situation "demonstrates the erosion of solidarity on a daily basis."

U.S. house. Speaker Mike Johnson is facing international criticism over his lack of swift action on Ukraine aid, which is ratcheting up pressure to make a critical decision that will not only have massive implications for his rookie speakership but also for Ukraine’s ongoing war effort against Russia.

So far, Johnson has resisted calls to bring a Senate-passed aid package up for a quick vote – a move that would require Democratic support and almost certainly spark a revolt from his right flank, something Johnson is eager to avoid. The speaker has said the legislation, which includes over $60 billion in assistance for Ukraine, would not pass in its current form, and privately told Republicans during a closed-door meeting last week there is “no rush” to address the issue, with Congress since having left town for a nearly two-week recess. The high stakes, high-profile debate & Johnson’s pivotal role in a legislative response came into even greater focus over weekend.

Global leaders gathered at annual Munich Security Conference, while Ukraine suffered a significant setback to Russian forces on the battlefield – twin developments that have injected a new sense of urgency for Congress to act as the 2nd anniversary of Russian invasion of Ukraine approaches this weekend & as the Ukrainian military warns it is running out of resources to resist.

While there is a contingent of House Republicans who support additional Ukraine aid and it has majority support from the chamber as a whole, Johnson has to manage a rambunctious right-flank that is deeply resistant to additional aid – including some who have threatened his job would suffer a similar fate as ousted former Speaker Kevin McCarthy if he puts a standalone bill on the floor. And further complicating matters, the Republican presidential frontrunner Donald Trump has also injected himself into the debate, urging Republicans to oppose Ukraine funding and continuing to rail against NATO.

Some GOP lawmakers like Sen. J.D. Vance echoed Trump’s rhetoric arguing no more support should be given, while others are offering bipartisan solutions in the absence of a clear path forward. But it is unclear where Johnson — who is caught in the middle of competing wings of his party stands, even amid fresh warnings over the weekend about the direness of the situation.

“I think many of us understand the plans are out there,” one GOP lawmaker, granted condition of anonymity to speak freely, told CNN.  “If there is a Mike Johnson plan, there aren’t any House Republicans that are aware of its existence.”

Russian forces in Ukraine are using a highly mobile and technologically advanced mortar that's designed to cause maximum damage, with minimal risk to its operators. The 120mm 2B23 Nona-M1 is a towed weapon that features a rifled barrel, a semi-automatic mechanism and is breech-loaded.

It can be fired remotely, so the crew do not fall victim to counter-battery fire from Ukrainian forces, a battlefield tactic at which the Ukrainians have proved to be adept.

The Nona-M1 can fire high explosive projectiles and finned bombs with a high degree of accuracy, with a maximum range of 8.8km and a minimum of 900 metres with high explosive projectiles.

It can fire nine rounds per minute using a high explosive rocket projectile or 11 rounds per minute with an explosive bomb. While the mortar is usually towed behind a truck, requiring a short amount of time to be set up for firing, Russia also produces a self-propelled tracked variant called the 2S9 Nona

Even Ukraine has expressed interest in buying KAAN. Ukrainian Ambassador to Turkey, Vasyl Bodnar, recently said: “We (Ukraine) will not only purchase the KAAN fighter jet, but we will also utilize it, and we know where it will be deployed.” He added that Ukraine is closely monitoring the development of the fifth-generation “KAAN” fighter jet. Bodnar expressed confidence that KAAN has the potential to stand on its own with other 5th-generation fighter jets like the American F-35 and F-22.

Ukrainian teams have also been “actively” participating in the KAAN project, the Ukrainian ambassador has revealed. While it is a significant achievement for the Turkish defense industry, experts feel that the haste with which it is pursuing the project would hinder the aircraft technology from venturing well. The world’s top military powers each have fifth-gen jets, but Russia, China, and the US are all facing problems with their fighters.

The US built the first 5th generation fighter – the F-22 Raptor, which is no longer in production. The US then followed it up with the F-35 Lightning II Joint Strike Fighter. Russia has the Su-57 Felon, and China has the J-20. While the manufacturing countries claim them to be 5th generation, they don’t meet all the criteria to fit in the category.

To qualify as a fifth-generation fighter, an aircraft must have certain features like stealth capabilities to avoid detection and the ability to cruise at supersonic speeds without engaging its afterburners, among other things. All these 5th-generation development programs have faced problems with stealth technology, engine development, and maintenance.

So, after the inaugural flight, experts will observe how Turkey makes KAAN stealthy enough to meet the 5th-generation fighter criteria.Turkey’s haste will only compound these problems.

Ankara is powering KAAN with two General Electric F-110 engines, also used on fourth-generation Lockheed Martin F-16 jets. Future developments may include the use of an indigenously developed TEI engine.

The Kremlin reacted Thursday, saying Biden's comments were "boorish" and more a humiliation for himself than for Putin. Kremlin Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov said it was likely there had been an attempt "to look like some cowboy from Hollywood, but frankly I don't think it's possible."

Vladimir Putin remains intent on trying to defeat and dominate Ukraine two years after launching an invasion that has caused more than half a million casualties, western officials said in a fresh assessment of the war. However, Putin is not thought to have any clearcut medium-term strategy, the officials added.

“We do not believe Russia has a meaningful plan beyond continuing to fight in the expectation that Russian manpower and equipment numbers will eventually tell,” they said. The officials also said they believed that “sanctions are hitting the Russian military complex hard”, causing severe delays and higher costs as Moscow scrambles to deal with shortages of western components.

As aid stalls, US Congress questions arise on how Donald Trump would handle Ukraine, if re-elected, how Europe help financial assistance for Ukraine's to fight against Russia. With 2nd anniversary approaching, Kiel Institute for World Economy shows US, Germany, UK, Denmark, and Norway are top five countries respectively contributing financially to Ukraine. Japan, Netherlands, Canada, Poland, and Sweden round out the top 10 in that order, data from January 2022 to January 2024.

Earlier this month, the US Senate passed with bipartisan support a $95.3 billion foreign aid bill, which includes $60 billion to Ukraine, but it has not yet passed the House.

Feb 10, Trump said to encourage Russia whatever the hell they want any NATO member country that doesn’t meet spending guidelines on defense in a stunning admission, he cannot abide by collective-defense clause at heart of the alliance if reelected.

More US sanctions against Russia are coming. Here are latest developments.

Russia-Ukraine war: key events on day 731.(LIVE) n on 2nd anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine

2-yrs ago, Putin invasion Ukraine, triggering a brutal war with no end in sigh, invasion killed thousands & hundred  who everyday is died & millions displaced since Russia began its "special military operation".

Russia's so-called military ops is entering its 2rd yr with no sign of resolution. (And will go on yr to yr...till 2027. Think so.) crying

Why?: Putin sent thousands (killed) of soldiers into Ukraine in February 2022, starting a full-scale war
and after 8-yrs of conflict in Ukraine between Ukraine forces & pro-Russia proxies war..

What Russia want in Ukraine? Putin continued to say & aim of war is the "denazification, demilitarisation and a neutral status" of Ukraine, saying choice was to agree or no agree to resolve issue "by force".

What does Ukraine say? Ukraine, on other hand, is looking for victory & the restoration of Russian federation -occupied Ukrainian land — including Crimea, they want it back the annexed land to return the Russia took in 2014 —back to Ukraine again.

Commentary: Two years on, where is Russia’s war on Ukraine going?. Russian defences have proven more sophisticated than expected, while the West has been unable to normalise assistance to Ukraine, says Pusan National University’s Robert Kelly.

Feb 24, 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin sent his army into Ukraine in violation of repeated Russian assurances against invasion.

The war was to last a week or two. Mr Putin anticipated a “blitzkrieg” - a rapid victory which would present the West with a fait accompli. Before the West had time to react, the war would be over, and the West would have to adjust to new facts on the ground.

Russian army bogged down in the outskirts of the Ukrainian capital and had to withdraw. In the east it penetrated along a broad front, but not deeply. It only took about 20% of Ukrainian territory. Importantly, it did not reach the Dnipro River, which bisects Ukraine, and therefore could not approach North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) territory.

Later in 2022, Ukraine counterattacked, rolling Russia out of about half of its conquests. In 2023, Ukraine tried a much larger offensive. This failed badly, resulting in a stalemate by the onset of winter. Russian defences were far more sophisticated than analysts had expected after its poor defensive showing in 2022. In the last six months, the frontlines have hardly moved.

Anyway, the war is hurting it economically, but not as much as expected. But it hurt world GDP growth is sluggish, and earlier predictions of contraction have also borne out into many nations. But not China, India and a few other players in the Global South have continued to trade with Russia going and keep attack Ukrainian folks and Putin like to do his killing.
