Russia seems to be more heavily using its air force for glide bomb attacks, That's despite Ukraine claiming to have shot down more than a dozen aircraft last month. Russian command may have decided the "positive effects" outweigh the costs, the ISW said.
Russia seems willing to risk its aircraft in its fight against Ukraine, deciding that losses are worth it despite reports of many being shot down, experts said. The Washington DC-based Institute for the Study of War said in an update on Tuesday that Russia appears to be maintaining a high frequency of fixed-wing air missions over Ukraine.
Russia "is possibly willing to tolerate risks to fixed-wing aircraft, likely because the Russian command may have decided that the positive effects generated by such air operations outweigh the costs associated with flying such missions," it said.
Ukraine says it shot down more than a dozen Russian military aircraft last month, on top of high killstreaks over the previous months.
But the ISW cited reports this week that suggested Russian aircraft are "continuing to conduct a relatively high volume of glide bomb strikes," despite Ukrainian claims to have downed many Russian jets.
The ISW highlighted a report that said Russian Su-34 aircraft, escorted by Su-35s, were conducting a hundred or more sorties a day using glide bombs. It also highlighted a New York Times report that said Russia is becoming more active in the air and that its "more aggressive" air support on the front lines has helped it advance recently in eastern Ukraine.
Russia recently intensified its use of glide bombs, and allow Ukraine's military targets further away by Ukraine's air defense systems & weaponry efforts to strike & killing more russia fighter planes suggested Ukraine's reported successes had caused Russia's air force to scale back its flights. Ukraine's military has been able to hold back through it is crucial to preventing a Russian victory.
Ukraine withdrew from Avdiivka last month, saying move was because Ukraine didn't have enough ammunition and supplies due to "congressional inaction" as Republicans blocked furthe aid. Russia using glide bombs near Avdiivka may be why Ukraine has been able to shoot down so many Russian jets, experts previously told Business Insider.
Russian aircraft need to fly higher to launch them, giving Ukraine's weaponry more time to target and hit them, they said. But the missiles Ukraine needs to shoot them down are running low, and experts told BI that this means Russia's air force could soon fly freely, causing effects so devastating that it could end the war.

Sergey Surovikin, Deputy Commander of the Russian United Grouping of Forces in Ukraine, has been detained by the Russian counterintelligence in connection with the mutiny led by Evgeny Prigozhin.

Ukraine has targeted Russian energy facilities in one of its largest cross-border drone and rocket attacks of the war. One attack hit an oil refinery in the Nizhny Novgorod region that produces nearly 6% of Russia’s total refined crude. Another hit an oil depot in the city of Oryol.
Videos online showed a major blaze at the Lukoil Norsi oil refinery near Nizhny Novgorod. An industry source said the main crude distillation unit (AVT-6) at Norsi was damaged, disrupting at least half of the facility’s production. Nizhny Novgorod is nearly 1,000km (620 miles) from the Ukrainian border and lies about 400km (250 miles) to the east of Moscow. Strike is the latest evidence of Ukraine’s growing ability to target critical infrastructure deep into Russian territory.

Russia went into Ukraine 2yrs ago with twice as many artillery pieces as Ukraine had. But it isn’t the advantage it’s the advantage in shells. Czechs found, for Ukraine, nearly a million shells precisely when Ukraine needed million shells. It’s not an exaggeration to say that Czech artillery initiative probably saved entire Ukrainian cities, by giving the Ukrainian army the firepower to resist a much bigger Russian army.
It’s no secret how Ukraine got into an artillery bind late last year. In early 2023, according, Washington Post, US quietly brokered a deal with South Korea – a country with sprawling artillery factories – to purchase, likely for billions of dollars, a whopping one million shells in standard Nato 155mm calibre, now also the standard artillery round of Ukraine.
Million shells, heaped on top of ammunition Ukraine was getting from USA & European countries, freed Ukraine’s 3,000 or so howitzers to blast away at a rate of at least 10,000 rounds a day – matching 1st time daily firing rate of Russia’s 6,000 howitzers. And why is not surprise Czech Republic involving with a dozen European countries, been so critical to Ukraine’s survival as Russia’s wider war on the country grinds into its third year. For months, Ukrainians achieved firepower parity on Russians.
Many analysts rate Ukraine’s mid-2023 counter offensive liberated just a few hundred square of miles in southern and eastern Ukraine, a profound disappointment, with modest gains. Five miles west of Avdiivka, Ukrainian troops halted their retreat, turned and counterattacked. Finally enjoying something approaching adequate artillery support, they stopped the Russian offensive dead in its tracks in villages with names like Berdychi, Orlivka and Tonen’ke.
Artillery – a shortage of it is main reason Ukrainians nearly lost a whole eastern oblast to Russians and spring, artillery – a million shells brokered by a tiny Eastern European country – is the main reason Ukrainians didn’t lose that whole oblast. Euro Commission said ASAP was focusing on powder and explosives, which were bottlenecks for ammunition shell production, & would allocate some three quarters of the programme to them. The programme will support projects in increasing the annual production capacity by more than 10k tons of powder by more than 4 300 tons of explosives.
iThis problem is investing €248 million in the development of powder production and another €124 million in production of explosives. It's noted thanks to the implemented measures, the European defense industry in Jan-2024 year to reached the capacity to produce 1 million shells per year.

Grant Shapps visit to Ukraine as UK defence secretary. Mr Shapps via Poland to Ukraine is accompanied by chief of the defence staff, Adm Sir Tony Radakin, but having arrived in Kyiv 7 March, Mr Shapps's journey to Odesa was cancelled abruptly at last minute, following trip was called off as an intelligence update revealed Kremlin's knowledge it.

Slavyansk ECO in Slavyansk-on-Kuban, Krasnodar Krai, has already become the 13th oil refining enterprise of russia to suffer from an attack over the recent weeks. Systematic destruction of russian oil refineries continues with the 13th publicly known effective strike beginning of 2024 landing onto the Slavyansk ECO facility in the city of Slavyansk-on-Kuban. Drone attack was reported on Sunday morning, Mar 17th.
Similarly strike days prior on Pervy Zavod refinery in Kaluga Oblast, this one can hardly be called a large plant by modern standards: capacity of Slavyansk ECO facility was 3 - 5 million tons (in different sources) of crude oil per year. For comparison, one of the larger enterprises attacked by Ukrainian forces earlier this month was LLC Lukoil-Nizhegorodnefteorgsintez plant processing 15 million tons of raw resource a yr.

Ukraine's capital Kyiv has experienced one of the largest Russian strikes on the city in weeks, with city officials stating that at least 13 people were injured in a drone and missile attack Thursday morning.

U.S. reportedly urges Kyiv to cease strikes on Russian oil refineries; Ukraine receives overseas assistance after energy grid hit.
Washington urged Kyiv to cease drone strikes on Russian energy infrastructure, cautioning that the attacks risk driving up global oil prices, the FT reported Friday.

The country’s occupied Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant — the largest in Europe — was on the verge of blackout after Moscow struck a nearby hydroelectric dam. Russian management said main power line was later restored.
Meantime, the International Monetary Fund approved a third review of Ukraine’s $15.6 billion loan program, allowing the embattled country to draw budget support of $880 million.

Kremlin said Friday that Russia is at war because of Western intervention in Ukraine, Reuters cited the Tass news agency as saying. Spokesperson Dmitry Peskov also said that Moscow needed to “liberate” Donetsk, Kherson, Luhansk and Zaporizhzhia — Ukrainian regions annexed by Russia in 2022.
