As Russia has amassed up to 25,000 soldiers around strategic settlement of Chasiv Yar, Ukrainian military said on Sunday, the Kremlin claims to have seized another village in the Donetsk region.
"The enemy has amassed a grouping of 20,000-25,000 servicemen" around Chasiv Yar, Nazar Voloshyn, a spokesperson for Ukraine's Khortytsia grouping of forces, told Ukrainian television in remarks reported by domestic media.
Newsweek has reached to Russian Defense Ministry for comment via email.
Chasiv Yar, a key town that sits west of the Russian-controlled Donetsk city of Bakhmut, was described by the U.S. think tank, the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), as a "fortress city." Capturing Chasiv Yar would help Russia attack the rest of Ukraine's significant defensive settlements, the ISW has evaluated.
Seizing Chasiv Yar could also allow Russia to cut off the settlement of Kostiantynivka, which would compromise the "backbone of Ukraine's defense" in the Donetsk region, the ISW said.
Ukraine's army chief, Colonel General Oleksandr Syrskyi, said last month that Moscow is attempting to "break through our defenses west of Bakhmut," take control of Chasiv Yar, and "create conditions for further advance" toward the Donetsk city of Kramatorsk that lies northwest of Chasiv Yar.
"Ukrainian and Russian forces continued to fight near Chasiv Yar on May 4, but there were no confirmed changes to this front line," the ISW assessed on Saturday. So, the Kremlin wants to capture Chasiv Yar by May 9, Syrskyi said

Speeding Toward Ukrainian Lines On Two Wheels, Russia’s Motorcycle Troops Got ‘Beaten In The Teeth’. Motorcycles offer very little protection to their riders...after losing nearly 15,000 combat vehicles in the first two years of its wider war on Ukraine, Russia got desperate.
Production of new vehicles, combined with the restoration of old vehicles from long-term storage, couldn’t keep pace with the monthly loss of more than 600 tanks, infantry fighting vehicles and armored personnel carriers.
That’s why, in the early months of the third year of the wider war, more Russian troops have been riding into battle in trucks, open-top golf carts and—more recently—motorcycles.
The growing number of unprotected—0r at best, minimally protected—vehicles on the Russian side of the front line doesn’t mean Russian forces can’t win battles against ammunition-starved, understaffed Ukrainian brigades.
But the devolution of Russian vehicles does underscore one of the Kremlin’s most serious challenges in a grinding war that officials in Moscow once claimed would end in Russian victory in mere days. “While Russia remains a serious battlefield threat, [its] ability to replace lost armored vehicles is limited,” Ukrainian analysis group Frontelligence Insight explained.
Armies have been riding on motorcycles for more than a century—in other words, as long as motorcycles have existed. A fast, maneuverable and inexpensive motorbike is an efficient way for a courier or scout to get around the battlefield.
The problem for Russian troops in 2024 is that, running low on purpose-built armored vehicles as well as larger civilian-style vehicles, they’re riding their unprotected bikes directly at Ukrainian positions—just like they started doing with their roofless Desertcross 1000 all-terrain vehicles a few months ago. “Motorcycles are replacing golf carts,” Ukrainian war correspondent Yuriy Butusov noted.
Swapping bigger vehicles for bikes has cost some Russian units dearly. On or around April 15, Ukrainian army’s 92nd Assault Brigade defeated an attack by Russian motorcycle troops outside of Bakhmut in eastern Ukraine. Three weeks later, around May 7, the Ukrainian 79th Air Assault Brigade destroyed eight motorcycles during a Russian assault on Novomykhailivka, also in the east. The Russians “were beaten in the teeth,” the brigade quipped on social media.
Frontelligence Insight cited one “vivid” example: a Russian motorcycle with a crude improvised sidecar for transporting several soldiers. The riders abandoned that overburdened bike during an assault on the eastern town of Bilohorivka, apparently last week. Despite the losses, at least one Russian unit still vouches for motorcycles as assault vehicles. The Zarya Battalion of the Russian army’s 123rd Motor Rifle Brigade claimed its bikes are faster and harder to spot than a heavier, slower armored vehicle.

Russian plot to kill Zelensky foiled, Kyiv says.
The Ukrainian security service (SBU) says it has foiled a Russian plot to assassinate President Volodymyr Zelensky and other high-ranking Ukrainian officials.Two Ukrainian govt protection unit colonels have been arrested.
SBU said part of network agents belonging to Russian security service (FSB) reportedly is searching for willing "executors" been among Mr Zelensky's bodyguards to kill him.
Ever since Russian paratroopers attempted to land in Kyiv and assassinate President Zelensky in the early hours & days of the full-scale invasion in February 2022, plots to assassinate him have been commonplace.
The Ukrainian leader said at the start of the invasion he was Russia's "number one target", this alleged plot stands out from the rest. It involves serving colonels, whose job it was to keep officials and institutions safe, allegedly hired as moles.
Other targets included military intelligence head Kyrylo Budanov and SBU chief Vasyl Malyuk, the agency added. They had also reported plann to kill Mr Budanov before Orthodox Easter, this year on 5 May.
To SBU, the plotters had aimed to use a mole to get info about his location, they would then have attacked with rockets, drones and anti-tank grenades. One officers who was later arrested had already bought drones & anti-personnel mines, SBU said.

Assassination of Zelensky meant to be inauguration gift
In further revelations about a Russian plot to assassinate Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, the head of Ukraine’s Security Services (SBU) Vasyl Malyuk said that the Russian operation was meant to be a gift for Putin before his inauguration.
Malyuk himself and Gen. Kyrylo Budanov, Chief of Military Intelligence (HUR), were also targeted for assassination.
“A small circle of people knew about our special operation, and I personally monitored its progress,” Malyuk said on the SBU Telegram channel.
“The terrorist attack, which was supposed to be a gift to Putin before the inauguration, was actually a failure of the Russian special services,” he added.
“But we must not forget – the enemy is strong and experienced, it cannot be underestimated. We will continue to preempt them, so that every traitor receives the court sentence they deserve,” Malyuk said.

Ukraine can recruit up to 20,000 convicts into army, Justice Minister says, this could fill its ranks with as many as 20,000 convicts in a move that also help ease overcrowding in Ukrainian prisons, Justice Minister Denys Maliuska told BBC Ukraine on May 10.
Ukraine's parliament, has passed a bill on May 8 permitting convicted of certain offenses can serve in military, paving way for voluntary mobilization of prisoners. Proposal was first submitted to parliament in March as Ukraine's efforts to replenish ranks in Armed Forces amid on war with Russia.
Deputy Justice Minister in March proposal says could free up 50,000 recruits among those who already served their sentence, as well as 26,000 of those who are currently imprisoned. While prisoners who are serving sentences due to "extreme" crimes should be left to serve their sentences, Ukraine could recruit 10,000 to 20,000 convicts, Maliuska estimated. "Question is in approaches. I say the numbers are completely uncalculated, because depending on each scenario, the number will be different," Maliuska said. He acknowledged such move is 100% echo Russia's policy of recruiting prisoners.

Russia Pushes ‘Aviation Boundaries’ With MiG-41 PAK DP 6th-Gen Fighters; Can It Really Fly By Early 2030s?.
Russia’s Mikoyan MiG-41 sixth-generation fighter as a replacement for the Mikoyan MiG-31 is back in the news. Reports are that Russia is pushing the boundaries of aviation engineering as it accelerates the development of the MiG-41.

MiG-41 Development Status -- MiG-41 PAK DP (Prospective air complex for long-range interception) is evolving Russian program to develop a stealth supersonic interceptor cum heavy fighter aircraft, to replace the Mikoyan MiG-31 in the Russian Aerospace Forces in the mid-2030s. The actual platform designation will evolve around the time it is entering service. It will imbibe sixth-generation technologies and design.
The design of the PAK DP was reportedly finalized around the end of 2019. Ilya Tarasenko, the General-Director of the MiG Corporation, as well as the head of the Sukhoi Company, said in an interview in July 2020 that the PAK DP will be created as an advancement of the MiG-31’s design.
Tarasenko also said that it would be a new platform design and construction capable of Mach number 4-plus, equipped with an anti-missile laser, and would be able to operate at very high altitudes and even in near space, flying at altitudes between the stratopause (45 km) and the tropopause (12 km).

One division of a Russian motorized rifle battalion refused to participate in the assault against Kharkiv Oblast, the partisan group Atesh reported on May 10.
Russian forces launched a new offensive against Kharkiv Oblast on May 10. Fighting continues in the region, though Ukrainian troops held off the initial attempt to break through Ukraine's defensive lines.
A member of Atesh, who serves in a motorized rifle battalion of the 44th Army Corps of the Russian Armed Forces, said that one division in his unit outright refused to participate in the offensive against Kharkiv Oblast.
The Atesh member said that soldiers in his unit were wary of the high-quality fortifications had been build along the Russian-Ukrainian border. He also said the soldiers had witnessed Russian sabotage and reconnaissance operations in the region that were unsuccessful.
"In view of this, when ... the order was given, part of the unit refused to carry out the criminal will of the command," Atesh reported.
Atesh said their members continue to work with Ukrainian forces to repel Russian attacks in Kharkiv Oblast.

Russians resume assaults near Kharkiv Oblast, escalation of fire expected.
It became known on 10 May that Russian occupation troops had intensified their activities in Kharkiv Oblast, and battles were ongoing there.

Putin proposes firing Shoigu, appoints new defense minister
Russian dictator Vladimir Putin on May 12 proposed firing Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and nominated Andrei Belousov to replace him, according to the Telegram channel of the Federation Council, the Russian parliament's upper house.
Putin appointed Shoigu as the secretary of Russia's security council, Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov said. Shoigu is replacing Nikolai Patrushev, who has been the council's secretary since 2008.
Shoigu has faced criticism from Russia's pro-war hawks for mishandling the war effort in Ukraine. However, it is not clear if his dismissal is a demotion since the position of the security council's secretary is considered to be among the most powerful in the country.
Meanwhile, Belousov is known as a supporter of boosting military spending and mobilizing Russia's economy for the war effort. Peskov said that Belousov's task is "to integrate the military-industrial complex into the country's economy."
Peskov also said that Putin had decided to appoint a civilian as defense minister since the "ministry should be open to innovation and progressive ideas."
Belousov was Russia's economy minister in 2012-2013, an aide to Putin in 2013-2020, and first deputy prime minister in 2020-2024.

US Blinken makes unannounced visit to Kyiv.
