TO FULLY realise its vision for Singapore, the ruling People’s Action Party (PAP) will need a continued mandate from voters that goes beyond a single term. This goal, said Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Wong on Sunday (Nov 5), depends on whether the party can continue to win the support of Singaporeans and be elected to form the government.

“The people’s support is not a given. The PAP may have won every election since 1959, but we can easily lose the next,” he said in a speech at the PAP’s awards and convention.

“I do not assume that the PAP will win the next GE (general election) convincingly, or even win it outright.”

but said that people are feeling the pressure and realise they cannot be bystanders or spectators when it comes to Singapore’s development.

Dr Chee said: “They feel the urgency and need to come forward and present themselves as candidates and join the opposition.”

Singaporeans are “still very nervous” about joining the opposition...

Not many S'poreans will want to risk their livelihood by joining the Opposition after witnessing Dr Chee Soon Juan and his equally accomplished wife lose almost everything by opposing the powers that be. It was also said that detainees had links with Filipino leftists and advocates of “liberation theology”' as well as Sri Lankan separatists. Liberation theology was reportedly a movement in Roman Catholic religious teaching advocating for the Church’s active involvement in combating social, political, and economic oppression.

Over a few weeks after the initial arrest in May 1987, six more people were arrested which brought the total under arrest to 22 people.

Following the arrest, Catholic priests Fathers Edgar D’Souza and Patrick Goh issued statements questioning the detentions. Church services were held for the detainees and their families and this contributed to the build-up of tension between Church and the govt. crying

Meeting was arranged with PM Lee Kuan Yew and Catholic Church in S'pore, Archbishop Gregory Yong & several other Catholic Church representatives. Lee’s prime concern was not has any conflict between Church & State. The group were shown documents relating to Cheng, included letters & meeting notes in Cheng’s handwriting. Archbishop Yong said to accepted Internal Security Department’s (ISD) evidence against Cheng was convinced, govt had nothing against Catholic Church when they arrested him.
Lee stressed govt upheld freedom of religion but will not tolerate the use of religion for subversive activities & a move to avoid conflict,

Fathers Joseph Ho, Patrick Goh, Edgar D’Souza & Guillaume Arotcarena resigned from all positions in church organisations. Archbishop Yong later suspended them from their preaching duties and warned the clergy not to mix politics & religion. He also announced the Catholic Centre for Foreign Workers would be shut down.

A few weeks after Cheng is arrest, a interviewed by local journalists in a televised programme how he had become interested in the idea of a classless society and class struggle after reading Maoist literature Tan had given him. He also revealed he used Catholic Church & various church bodies & publications they provided to
ready cover their further cause. Cheng said Tan wanted him to build a broad base of grassroots organisations could be used to build political action against the govt through means such as demonstrations, strikes & riots. The strategy was aimed at “confronting the Govt, creating turmoil in country, agitating the masses, so that in creating instability, the govt of the day can be overthrown”. He (Cheng) expressed regret using church institutions and manipulating young people who trusted him.

Tan’s role in the Marxist plot was evident in the letters that he wrote to Chia Boon Tai. The letters were not sent to Chia directly but were instead addressed to Chia’s brother in Johor Baru. In the letters, Tan suggested using the church’s support and goodwill to further their cause.

Cheng served with a 2-year detention order. 11 others, including Teo Soh Lung, were served with one-year detention orders. Six more persons were arrested while some of the detainees were released.

Noted: In a two-part television documentary titled Tracing The Conspiracy. The detainees spoke of the roles they played in an intricate network. Tang Lay Lee and Teo revealed how they targeted the Law Society as a pressure group to oppose the govt.

The SDP has a comprehensive suite of policies on a range of issues such as housing, education, immigration and healthcare – many of which have been “liberally borrowed” by the People’s Action Party (PAP) but “unfortunately watered down”, said Prof Tambyah.

At a press conference that followed, Dr Chee said one of the key issues the party will bring up at the next general election is the cost of living. He expects that it will be held by November or December 2024.

He (Dr Chee) said that inflation is kicking in, and the upcoming goods and services tax increase is “going to hurt”.
https://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/singapore-democratic-party-moves-headquarters-west-outlines-plans-for-2024

On new faces that the party could potentially field, Dr Chee said that they will be presented in a “timely manner” in the lead-up to the General Election. The party has had people reach out to them, he said.

He added that Singaporeans are “still very nervous” about joining the opposition, but said that people are feeling the pressure and realise they cannot be bystanders or spectators when it comes to Singapore’s development.

Dr Chee said: “They feel the urgency and need to come forward and present themselves as candidates and join the opposition.”

Despite being closer to constituencies in the west, Prof Tambyah said the SDP will remain active in the PAP-run Sembawang

SINGAPORE: The most intriguing part of the recent announcement on the handing over of the premiership to Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Wong was that it will be done before the next General Election (GE), which is due by November 2025.

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong did not say when the handover would take place, beyond saying it could be before November next year if all goes well.

This means the new Prime Minister will lead the People’s Action Party (PAP) into electoral battle possibly within a year of taking over.

Is it politically risky for Mr Wong to take on this challenge at such an early juncture in his leadership?.

Why Singapore is ‘friend of all, enemy of none’ in Israel-Gaza war The tightly-controlled city-state has turned down protest requests and urged people not to display political symbols. Since war erupted in Gaza. The tiny Southeast Asian city-state of Singapore has taken a stance of non-interference, reflecting a long-held foreign policy focused on being a “friend to all and enemy to none”.

At a special parliamentary session earlier this month, Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Wong explained that Singapore’s “longstanding support for a two-state solution remains unchanged”, in that Palestinian people have the right to a homeland and that Israel has the right to live within secure borders.

"Singapore “consistently takes a principled position” in line with international law and support of global peace and security, Wong stressed.

The country has come out strongly to condemn Hamas’s October 7 assault on southern Israel, in which 1,200 people were killed and some 200 taken captive, as “acts of terrorism”.

But it has also condemned the rising death toll in Gaza, with the foreign ministry saying on Friday that it was “deeply concerned” about the humanitarian situation in the besieged enclave where more than 13,000 people have been killed since Israel’s bombardment began.

In late October, Singapore was among the 120 countries voting in favour of a resolution to protect civilians and uphold legal and humanitarian obligations during an emergency session of the United Nations General Assembly.

PAP must improve how it communicates – not just rely on government communications – making it clear what it stands for and its long-term plans.

"We need to highlight the differences between the policies of the PAP and the policies of the opposition," said Mr Wong, adding that in most areas the opposition's proposed policies are "shades of the PAP's policies".

"But in some areas, the positions are fundamentally different, and we must explain why our approach is better for Singapore and Singaporeans."

Policies do not happen in a vacuum and are driven by politics, said Mr Wong, adding that long-term policies require "political durability and consistency" to follow through.

For some people suffering with severe cases of COVID-19 will show signs of kidney damage, even those who had no underlying kidney problems before they were infected with the coronavirus.

Signs of kidney problems in patients with COVID-19 include high levels of protein or blood in the urine and abnormal blood work.

(Try to take less food if can to about 80% full.

Studies indicate more than 30% of patients hospitalized with COVID-19 develop kidney injury, and more than 50% of patients in the intensive care unit with kidney injury may require dialysis. Sperati says early in the pandemic, some hospitals were running short on machines and sterile fluids needed to perform dialysis.

“As general treatments for patients with COVID-19 have improved, the rates of dialysis have decreased. This has helped to alleviate shortages, although intermittent supply chain disruptions remain a concern.

“Many patients with severe COVID-19 are those with co-existing, chronic conditions, including high blood pressure and diabetes. Both of these increase the risk of kidney disease,” he says.

But Sperati and other doctors are also seeing kidney damage in people who did not have kidney problems before they got infected with the virus.
