However, moving up the escalation ladder is also fraught with risks, not just in a miscalculation but also leaving itself with fewer rungs to climb in the future. This limits its room for manoeuvre in the future and China will likely have to up the ante to instil any psychological or political effects as before.
Indeed, several news reports from Taiwan have suggested that the locals have adopted a blasé view towards the ongoing Chinese military activity around the island, with life going on as usual despite the ongoing rhetorical and figurative fireworks across the Taiwan Strait.

When Japan tried to change the status of Diaoyu Islands, China further consolidated the change in favour of China. Now Japan is cut off from the islands completely.
When USA and Philippines tried to change the status of SCS, China further consolidated the change in favour of China. Now China is in control of most part of SCS.

Now that middle line of Taiwan Strait is gone forever. Taiwan's airspace and the water around Taiwan Island are "playground" of PRC.

The Chinese smartly use international agreement Tw is part of Cn,
to drill very near to Tw coast, breaking decades of mutual respect middle line as sphere of control.
From here after, mC will able to react even faster, enhance their ability to military take over if they want to.
It will be a bad news if US want to physically involved,
but if US has all the while not interested to set foot into Tw, then it is still good news as easier to make Tw to buy more weapons.

the chinese weapon systems have improved a lot since gulf war II.
their tanks are not sitting duck like sadam one.
aircraft carrier are not safe from their missiles and nuclear sub.
so a missiles attack from sea like those middle east type are not possible.
if engage in land battle the terian is hilly with vegetation. chinese westeran end are filled with deep tunnel, so nuclear war also will not win.
airforce half fight, until actual fight unknown who is stronger. missiles, anti tank weapon etc are also about par.
but chinese one are cheaper to made. so if they engaged by numbers the more expensive maker is at disadvantage.
think overall the show of power is good to help those who sits comfortable in office crying war know what they are doing and not trigger a war when everyone want peace.

china was weak during the ching dynasty as their top, middle, and bottom management are weak.
