Finland, which obtained energy mainly from Russia before the war, by the end of September managed to reduce its gas consumption by over 50%. Lithuania, Latvia, Sweden, as well as Denmark, and the Netherlands also managed to do so to a lesser extent.
Austria, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and most of the countries of Southern Europe did not manage to meet the target. Portugal reduced its pre-war gas demand by only 4% , Italy by 2% and Spain even increased it by 2%.
Against this background, France looks the worst, where gas consumption is practically at the pre-war level.
"Berlin has systematically outbid its neighbors when it comes to purchasing gas," says Spiegel.
Paris opposes the Spanish-German gas pipeline. In Germany, political parties are blocking new gas drilling sites in many locations. Groningen, which could supply Europe with its own raw materials for many years, "says Spiegel.
"Instead of allowing the production of shale gas on their own continent, Europeans prefer to buy fuel in America for a lot of money, and then subsidize its use in the country with even more money. This brings double the joy in Washington and double frustration in Europe" - summarizes "Spiegel" .
