Tetsuya Yamagami - who was arrested at the scene - confessed to assassinating the former prime minister of Japan because he thought he had links to the Unification Church. In social media posts, Yamagami believes her mother's large donations to the organization have ruined her family.
The Unification Church acknowledged Yamagami's mother donated more than 100 million yen, including life insurance and real estate. Half of the money was later returned at a request from the suspect's uncle, AP reported.
