Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam said even a single fatality from Covid-19 would be a major cause for concern, underscoring the ultra-strict “Covid Zero” approach that has raised questions about the city’s viability as an international financial center.
In an interview with Bloomberg Television on Monday, Lam said she was “duty bound to protect my people” with travel restrictions even as other finance centers such as Singapore open up and shift to a strategy of living with the virus.
“Any fatality or increase in fatality will cause a major concern in society,” Lam said. While she acknowledged concerns over travel by the business community, she said most companies were in Hong Kong in order to access the mainland.
Lam’s government has implemented a strict “Covid Zero” policy in order to reopen the border with China. But that approach, which doesn’t tolerate any local infections, has increasingly strained the city’s longstanding reputation as a regional hub and an economic and financial gateway to China.

She is the best HK governor one of the few strong leaders who put the people first (in line with Xi jinping) All past 3 men caved in to hooligan protesters unreasonable demands. She stood her ground despite extremely challenging time. She won and brought HK back to stability and prosperity again.

It shows her ineffectiveness. HK per capita death (28) is higher than SG (27). Even if surpassed, HK will certainly overtake again some time in future.

Delta variant came to Singapore in a big way because leaders wanted to keep open for South Asian visitors.
Once delta spread they decided to go for living with covid strategy when vaccination reach 80% ...I.e untaxed 20%.
The health risk of contracting the virus was unchanged through out the period. The number of unvaxed at 20% matters as it I still significant. Opening up and letting the number of cases increase will risk many people. It's not only death but Long covid which affects 10% or more of people infected including mild and asymptomatic cases.
If lives of people matter, there is really no choice...until science hand us a choice through better vaccines and treatment comes along.
Because we wish to open up ...because we wish to have a better economy....we decided to open up and expect the virus to play along to give us good outcomes?...this is wishful thinking not logical decision making.
0.2% death rate is 11,000 lives.
10% Long covid is 580,000 people affected in the long term.
Long term and far sighted thinking is crucial in this pandemic. Taking some short term pain and economic cost im return for long term well being may be the most prudent approach.

Our garment had bet on the 'wrong horse', and now we are left with 'Delta' virus which is ultra infectious... We just need to close our borders who are infested with the Covid-19, Delta, MU or black fungus virus.....

Because you think you cannot afford something does not mean you allow yourself to be compelled to do something that can turn out worse.
That is the thinking of people who don't have money so they feel they have no choice but to steal and rob...
Of course we have a choice of what to do.....we always have a choice...you can always work out a choice through wise thinking...letting situation push you into mistakes is unwise.

We are free to do what we want, to buy toto, 4-D, mix with wrong company and do petty crime, it is also your choice. We should be prudent with our CPF accounts and have enough money to last us till our old age of 85.....
