Russian President Vladimir Putin commented on the strengthening of cooperation between the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and Japan in the Asia-Pacific region, saying,
"Western nations will create a new axis, similar to the one formed by the fascist governments of Germany and Italy and militarism and Japan in the 1930s. I'm starting to make it in 2020," he insisted. He said in an interview with state television aired on the 26th.
A China-Russia joint statement issued on the 21st along with Chinese President Xi Jinping's visit to Russia expressed "great concern about strengthening cooperation between NATO and the Asia-Pacific region." He also mentioned the negative impact of a “free and open Indo-Pacific”. Mr Putin's remarks received this.
