It is still popular. You can watch the movie dating back to the 80s. It is about this Ang mo girl Isabella who fell in love with this malay lead singer but her family object to their relationship.

There are many mat rock bands. Search and Wings are the more established but there are others too. Iklim,Bumiputra Rockers, Gravity, Gamma, Mega, Febians, May etc. One unknown band Desire I quite like as I got their album all ballads.

I dunno melayu but I like the band music as it is rock style guitars and drum shiok better than s*x for me.
Introduce you Ikim Suci Dalam Debu. Desire Bias Cinta. Ignore their lifestyle as some do drugs but their musical talent is good can fight with Western bands.
