The "Montevideo Maru" was sunk by a US submarine on July 1, 1942.
About 979 Australians, at least 850 of them soldiers, were killed in the sinking of the Montevideo Maru, Australia's worst-ever maritime disaster.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said on social media:
"The resting place of the lost souls on the Montevideo Maru has finally been found. Of the 1,060 prisoners of war on board, 850 Australian soldiers died prematurely. I hope today's news can bring some comfort to the family members who have been waiting for a long time."
