the wounds look more like due to fighting.

they are known to fight for female to mate, and when ready to spawn, they'd swim up rivers and get more injuries on the way, change color and look monstrous

no sp sunblock. maybe more floating solar panel on the ocean as temporary shelter of shade for the living in the oceans.
