Many of them have weak legs, so prefer not walk all the way to the back to exit. Second reason is that they are afraid the driver cannot see them and may close the door on them while exiting halfway, whereas at the front door, the driver is less likely to be cock eye.

?? I don't think is this reason. Quite a lot of them told me that they have difficulty walking so they just go up through the front door, sit at the nearest seat and go out from the front door. Eliminates quite a few steps. Helps quite a bit especially if the bus is crowded.
