The longer this situation drags on, the more damaging it becomes for Russian political and military leadership, which cannot convincingly claim military dominance while Ukrainian troops hold ground inside Russian borders. To rectify this, Russian forces have launched repeated large-scale assaults all over the Kursk salient, attempting to overwhelm Ukrainian positions with sheer numbers. However, most of these attacks fail before making any meaningful gains. Even when Russian forces do manage to capture ground, it is often minimal and against heavy casualties.

Context: Likely Russian breakthrough near Sudzha is to secure access route to a Ukrainian supply road in Kursk Oblast – the Sumy-Yunakivka-Sudzha road from south. Since Jan 2025, Russians been attempting to take control of this road. At end of February, they made their first attempt to approach road from north via the village of Novenke.

Background: On 2 March, DeepState reported that the situation in Russia’s Kursk Oblast remained critical for Ukrainian defence forces. Russian troops were focussing their efforts on maintaining fire control over Ukraine’s supply routes, while insufficient countermeasures had been taken on the Ukrainian side. On the night of 7 March, DeepState reported further Russian advances in both Kharkiv Oblast & Kursk Oblast in Russia. 

According to their data, Russian forces had moved forward near Kurilovka in Kursk Oblast and Fyholivka in Kharkiv Oblast.

These are not large-scale assaults. From Russia Forces forced the Ukraine to fight back, they attempts to hit Ukrainian defence forces out of Kursk Oblast, they primarily exert pressure on our flanks within the region. Subsequently, they try to expand the active combat zone by advancing into Ukrainian territory. However, all components of the defence forces are operating in this direction to prevent that, using all available weapons."
