When I was a student in the 1980s and 90s, I did not have the Internet to turn to for information. I had to borrow books from the library to read and extract what I needed for my research papers. That forced me to consult multiple sources of different types. I never found what I was looking for from a single source and see that as the solution, because different authors gave me a different perspective on a particular topic. My peers made it a point to compare their findings with another source and look into who funded the research. Not many readers today would check that the sources cited by a reputable publication are legitimate; they merely believe the info to be credible owing to the reputation of the publisher.
