China nearly won over the Philippines when President Rodrigo Duterte was around. Things started to sour after the Spratly Islands dispute began around 1990.  It got uglier when the Philippines won the UNCLOS arbitration in 1998.  Now China has lost the Philippines entirely in the hands of Marcos.

Lost is ok. China just need Taiwan to declare independence and pinpoint America as the troublemaker.
