Private healthcare charges cannot go unregulated
#1

Escalating healthcare cost appears to be inevitable. However, it is not just errant doctors who are responsible. As long as healthcare is a business and private hospitals are run by publicly listed companies that are responsible to shareholders, charges will continue to rise. Private hospitals charge exorbitant prices for specialists to rent clinics in their medical centres and use the operating theatres and other facilities. These are inevitably passed onto their patients.

Private hospitals, faced with high financial targets set by the management, offer referral fees or rebates which encourage doctors to carry out unnecessary laboratory and radiology tests to generate income.
