Ford the latest automaker to exit car manufacturing in India

FRI, SEP 10, 2021 - 7:20 AM  UPDATED FRI, SEP 10, 2021 - 7:34 AM

[MUMBAI] Ford will stop manufacturing cars in India and expects to record a US$2 billion restructuring charge after failing to find a "sustainable path" forward, the American auto giant said on Thursday.

......

Harley-Davidson announced its withdrawal last year and General Motors in 2017.

Ford said it had accumulated operating losses of more than US$2 billion over the past 10 years and an US$800 million write-down of assets in 2019.

......

"They were the only carmaker shipping cars from India to the United States. And they are going out at a time when we (India) are discussing production-linked incentives for automotives."

......

India was expected to become the world's third-largest car market by 2020 after China and the United States with sales of some 5 million vehicles a year. Instead, sales have languished at about 3 million, still trailing Europe and Japan too.

......

Ford has the capacity to produce about 440,000 cars in India a year across both plants but is only using about 25per cent of that

......

There are 400 Ford outlets in India where dealers over time have invested 20 billion rupees (US$272 million), the association said in a statement, adding that the automaker had been appointing new dealers until as recently as five months ago.

"Such dealers will be at the biggest financial loss in their entire life," it said.

The only cars that sell well in India are cheap cars. No way for Americans to compete with Delta variant cars on price.

As Ford takes the exit route from India, dealers urge govt to step in

Days after Ford announced its decision to stop operations in India, employees and dealers of the company have decided to challenge the plan for a complete shutdown.

Leaving only ‘Ford Business Solutions’ operational in the country, Ford India’s decision to cease manufacturing vehicles for sale in India immediately will affect thousands of employees directly and hundreds of others in related sectors, they said.

......

Gulati said Ford India has promised to adequately compensate dealers who continue their services for vehicle owners. “But that promise is not going to compensate for the huge investments made by dealers. Ideally, the government should step in and ensure that the company continues their services for a deserving period, as they are still selling their vehicles in India,” Gulati said.

......

He said: “All developed markets have a Franchise Protection Act. Once this Act is there, companies can’t abruptly exit. They have to give sufficient time and suitable compensation. Dealership agreements then will have a long-term vision. It takes around Rs 5-6 crore to set up a Ford dealership in India. There is specific Ford-related hardware and infrastructure that is of no use once you are not associated with the brand. Dealers are SMEs and family-run partnerships, and this will be the biggest loss in their entrepreneurial career. Ford has 4,000 employees, the dealers have 40,000 employees…”
