2 teenage boys fatally shot in Atlanta after social media dispute

UPDATED DEC 18, 2022, 8:04 PM SGT

CALIFORNIA - Two teenage boys were fatally shot in Atlanta on Saturday after a social media dispute escalated into a shoot-out, leaving at least three other young people injured

......

multiple people had been shot at an apartment complex about 22km south-west of downtown Atlanta at about 5.09pm local time, where they found a 14-year-old and a 16-year-old dead

......

An 11-year-old boy, a 15-year-old girl and a 15-year-old boy had also been shot and were transported to local hospitals

......

Atlanta Police Department deputy chief Charles Hampton Jr said “there was some type of dispute on social media that escalated to gunfire”. He said one group of teenagers had gone to the apartment with guns, and that another group had fired their weapons.

“Both parties had weapons,” Mr Hampton said, adding that the dispute had begun inside the apartment before moving outside, and that “multiple people were shooting”.

......

Atlanta’s crime rate has risen rapidly in recent years, and the issue was at the centre of the city’s 2021 mayoral race as residents became fed up with the soaring violence.

The Atlanta Police Department has recorded 157 homicides so far this year. There were 161 homicides in 2021, and 157 homicides in 2020, a 60 per cent jump from 2019

......

“It’s just too many guns in the hands of our youth,” Mr Hampton added. “This should be a time that we are getting ready for the holidays. But we have at least two families that will be planning for funerals.”
