It's not really that new. Been found in humans since 1970 and animals in 1958. US had an outbreak of monkeypox in 2003 with 71 cases (worst outbreak outside Africa historically) and a single case in 2021. Before 2022, other outbreaks are mainly in Africa. For non-Africa cases, UK had 4 cases in 2018 and 3 cases in 2021. Singapore had 1 case (imported from Nigeria) in 2019.
Not sure about the vaccine but I read somewhere they used the smallpox vaccine for vaccination as the two viruses are closely related.
