CATL topped the list, with battery cell shipment surging 93 percent from a year earlier to 192 GWh in 2022.

China's CATL delays American plant as Pelosi visits Taiwan

A giant Chinese supplier of electric-vehicle batteries decided to push back announcing a multibillion-dollar North American plant to supply Tesla Inc. and Ford Motor Co. due to tensions raised by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s trip to Taiwan, according to people familiar with the matter.

>Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Ltd., the world’s biggest maker of batteries for electric vehicles, has been considering at least two locations in Mexico near the Texas border, as well as sites in the US, for the plant. China’s CATL has been in an advanced stage of site selection and negotiating incentives, in anticipation of announcing its selection in the coming weeks.

CATL now plans to wait until September or October to make the announcement, the people familiar with the process said Tuesday, asking not to be identified as the information isn’t public. The concern is that an announcement could stoke tensions at a sensitive time in US-China ties amid the controversial Pelosi visit to Taiwan, they said.

A representative for CATL didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment. Tesla also didn’t respond to requests for comment. Ford declined to comment.

Shares of Tesla trimmed earlier gains, trading up 0.8% to $899.11 as of 1:36 p.m. in New York. Ford fell into negative territory, declining 0.7% to $15.24.

CATL to build second European EV battery plant in Hungary

Chinese battery maker CATL announced Friday that it will build a new 100 gigawatt-hours (GWh) battery pack factory for €7.3 billion ($7.6 billion) in Hungary, as it eyes growing demand among global automakers such as Mercedes-Benz and BMW. Construction will begin by the end of the year in the eastern Hungarian city of Debrecen. The plant will be CATL’s second standalone facility in Europe, following its Thuringia, Germany plant, which will have a capacity of 11 GWh and begin mass production later this year. Last month, EV maker Nio revealed plans to begin building battery swap stations in its first overseas plant in Pest, Hungary, from September.

Biggest EV battery makers ranking reveals a new second place as Tesla suppliers LG and Panasonic drop

The latest numbers from the SNE Research shop show that, while Tesla's battery suppliers are vying for supremacy, its biggest competitor BYD which also makes its own cells, is actually climbing in the ranks and is now the world's second largest battery maker together with LG. Here's the current market share of the globe's top 10 battery manufacturers:

  5. SK On: 5.4%
  6. Samsung: 4.7%
  7. CALB: 3.9%

BYD experienced the biggest jump from 11% to 13.6% market share, while the makers of 2170 battery cells for Tesla's performance electric cars - LG and Panasonic - actually dropped with a similar rate. Tesla moved to LFP batteries for its standard range Model 3 and Model Y vehicles that are currently its bestselling versions. A year ago, "nearly half of Tesla vehicles produced in Q1 were equipped with a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, containing no nickel or cobalt," said Tesla, and that share has grown since, boosting the LFP battery maker CATL's market share further.

Six Chinese companies – CATL, BYD Co., CALB Co., Gotion High Tech, Sunwoda and Farasis Energy – made it to the list of the world’s ten largest battery suppliers for full electric vehicles, plug-in hybrids and hybrids in 2022, according to SNE Research, a Korean consultancy.

The six companies collectively shipped 313 gigawatt-hours of battery cells last year, grabbing 60 percent of the global market, according to the data SNE Research released this week.

CATL topped the list, with battery cell shipment surging 93 percent from a year earlier to 192 GWh in 2022.

BYD tied for the second spot with Korea’s LG Energy Solution. It shipped 70 GWh of battery cells last year, a 167 percent jump.

CALB, Gotion, Sunwoda and Farasis ranked seventh, eighth, ninth and tenth, with respective battery cell shipment spiking 152 percent, 112 percent, 253 percent and 215 percent to 20 GWh, 14 GWh, 9.2 GWh and 7.4 GWh.
