If I may express my view on this article openly... It's a badly written article without much substance. I think it is just there to generate eyeball traffic at best.

In any case, what's considered substantial savings?

Looking back at every company that I have worked in, there were junior staff and middle managers who lived in condos/landed homes and drove expensive cars, while some members of the senior management stayed in HDB units and relied on public transport. I know that these lower level staff either had an inheritance, came from a wealthy family or were still living with their parents and using the family car to commute to work at that point in time.
