Even though S'pore holds regular elections, has a multi-party system and enjoys high standards of living, it falls short of certain democratic ideals. The ruling party has been in power since independence in 1965; this dominance limits political competition and reduces the effectiveness of opposition parties. There are strict laws on freedom of speech, assembly and govt control of the press which stifle dissent and prevent the free exchange of ideas. The govt owns a significant portion of the media which influences news coverage and limits the perspectives available to citizens.

We are not even invited to World Democratic Summit. US is leading this Summit. Is it we are not democratic and that is why we are deprived of this Summit? Many countries were invited. Is a lost of face for all Singsporeans.

While S'pore has a strong legal system, it has often been used to silence opposition and suppress dissent. The electoral system, which includes gerrymandering and the use of non-transferable votes, favours the ruling party and disadvantages opposition candidates.

There are supporters of S'pore's political system like you who argue that the ruling party has delivered economic prosperity, social stability and a high quality of life for its wealthier citizens. The strong rule of law and low levels of corruption resonate with you. Whether SG is considered a genuine democracy is a matter of perspective and depends on the specific criteria used to assess our system. While SG has made significant strides in economic development and social progress, there are also areas where it falls short of traditional democratic ideals.
