Pu-erh tea contains **lovastatin**, a type of statin. Lovastatin was found in Pu-Erh tea under ethyl acetate extraction, and it existed merely as lactone form in ethyl acetate and methanol extracts. Clinical trials have confirmed that statin decreases the incidence of major coronary and cerebrovascular events and this may be due to its hypolipidemic and anti-inflammatory effects.  Rolleyes

Statins are prescribed by doctors to treat high (bad) cholesterol. There are various statins like lovastatin, atovarstatin, etc.

Statins are also found in puer and some other tea leaves. 

If you are already taking cholesterol medicine ie a statin tablet, be careful with drinking tea which contains statin. You don't want to get an overdose. 

Uncontrolled bad cholesterol can lead to cerebrovascular events which in layman's language is a stroke..

The best way to control your cholesterol is not to be on statin meds or drink tea which has statins but watch what you eat. Avoid kway chap for example... but anyhow once you've come down with hyperlipidemia ie a bad cholesterol problem, you'd need statin for life. Still, do stop eating pig's innards.
