Nowadays they don’t go the extra mile.  They just need to toe the official line and their jobs are safe.

It's that the standard of English in Singapore has dropped, and these writers are just not as good as those before.  

I have noticed for a very long time that our Yoomers and Zoomers can't speak English well.

All through the years, their writers had made errors from time to time.  The editor would follow up with a "Correction" and "We apologize for the inconvenience caused" in a later edition.
