PM Australia will reinstate support payments for casual workers who have to quarantine due to Covid-19, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said on Saturday, as a fresh wave of Omicron-driven infections sweeps the country.
Australia is battling a major virus outbreak driven by the highly transmissible new Omicron subvariants, BA.4 and BA.5, with authorities warning it could lead to more people ending up in hospitals and further straining the health system.
“I want to make sure that people aren’t left behind, that vulnerable people are looked after,” Albanese told reporters after a snap meeting with state leaders.

That is a good move by the Australian Government.
Most Australian workers working in the industries are paid hourly and not a salary. When they are sick, they will be paid only at an employee’s base pay rate for each hour or part of an hour of leave they take. This sick payment excludes the overtime payment, bonuses, and allowances that they might get when they are working. At times, the extra payment can be double the basic hourly pay and can be up to 38 hours per week. They can lose 30% to 50% of their pay
Therefore, this Covid support payment will mean a lot for these hourly rate workers who will loose out in their pays.
