Sakura is just a Japanese name for Cherry Blossoms. The Japanese have developed many varieties of it just like Singapore has developed many varieties of orchids (the Chinese, including Taiwan, have developed many varieties of orchids too).

Promotion. The Japanese have been promoting it for decades. They even grow the trees so create tourist spots.

You go Washington D.C. and see the cherry blossoms. Very nice. In fact, if a place has lots of cherry blossom trees together, the view will be nice. Once, I went Hangzhou to view cherry blossoms after a project in Shanghai with my colleagues. Great scenery.

That is because Sporeans love Japan very much, almost everyone wants to visit Japan but only a handful number of people are interested in China. Actually China has a lot of places to see Sakura, one of them is one of the largest Sakura park in the world, not many Sporeans are aware of.
