What to do about rising medical costs in Singapore

Slowing down the rapidly rising cost of healthcare in Singapore requires the authorities to be willing to try new ways to solve the problem, says former veteran newspaper editor Han Fook Kwang.

Escalating healthcare cost - especially in the private sector - appears to be inevitable. However, it is not just errant doctors who are responsible. As long as healthcare is a business and private hospitals are run by publicly listed companies that are responsible to shareholders, charges will continue to rise. Private hospitals charge exorbitant prices for specialists to rent clinics in their medical centres and use the operating theatres and other facilities. These are inevitably passed onto their patients. Private hospitals, faced with high financial targets set by the management, offer referral fees or rebates which encourage doctors to carry out unnecessary laboratory and radiology tests to generate income.

Since the Ministry of Health has stated clearly that private hospital charges are not under its purview, they have given these facilities a free hand to determine prices for both medicine and supplies.  Is it any wonder that private hospital bills have more than tripled over the past 20 years?
A routine check on inpatient bills will show that hospital fees may amount to anywhere between 50 to 80% of the total charges. The pharmacy category alone may consist of 40% of the entire bill owing to astonishing mark-ups.

Must we do the job of Health Ministers?

They cannot think of solutions nor solve the problem they created?

Then sack them, lah.

Why do we need 5 Mayors and 80 PAP Ministers?

Most desperate move if you don’t want to burden your children.
Get a lawyer to break tie with your children.

For children,
Not so worse case, break tie with your sibling in order to get the garment subsidy.

Best is to set a fund now with your siblings, every month contribute a small sum to fund your LKK parents medical bill in future. Dont wait until last min.
