Because Osama bin Laden and about 100+ Al Qaeda operatives were hiding in Afghanistan. Al Qaeda is responsible for the 9/11 attacks. While Taliban and Al Qaeda don't see eye to eye, Taliban also does not want to waste lives to hunt them down despite US' demands. Taliban also wanted US to give concrete evidence.
US is not happy so US decided to conquer Afghanistan so that they can get rid of bin Laden and those 100+ Al Qaeda operatives. The US never really reached its objective of killing bin Laden in Afghanistan despite conquering it. bin Laden was killed in Pakistan later.
