Today the Russian MOD released a statement to explain its actions in Kharkov
Translated Statement by the official representative of the Russian Ministry of Defense
"In order to achieve the stated goals of the special military operation to liberate Donbass, a decision was made to regroup the Russian troops stationed in the Balakleya and Izyum regions to build up efforts in the Donetsk direction.
To this end, within three days, an operation was carried out to curtail and organize the transfer of the Izyum-Balakley group of troops to the territory of the Donetsk People's Republic.
During this operation, a number of distraction and demonstration activities were carried out with the designation of the real actions of the troops.
In order to prevent damage to Russian troops, a powerful fire defeat was inflicted on the enemy using aviation, missile troops and artillery.
Over three days, more than two thousand Ukrainian and foreign fighters were destroyed, as well as over a hundred units of armored vehicles and artillery."

There we go. Russian troops conducted an orderly retreat from Kharkov to focus on a new offensive in Donetsk. Ukraine troops entered and got hammered. Over 2000 killed. So, thousands more must have been wounded. It fits the "3000 to 5000 losses" that pro-Russian bloggers estimated.
As stated before, Russian objective in this special military operation (they are not even calling this a war) is to Liberate Donbass (Kharkov is not part of Donbass), Demilitarise and Denazify Ukraine. Because it is doing this with limited number of troops, it will capture territory and retreat as & when necessary to achieve the objective. Like a soccer match where players pass the ball and move in & out of the opponent's half of the pitch to score goals, regroup and move on to win the game.
Ukraine regained a SMALL piece of its territory at a very high cost. It went for broke, using its best forces and digging into reserves. But its making BIG shout out about it. (In comparison, when Russia captured these areas, they made no fuss about it). Coincidentally, Nato big guns are meeting in Ramstein, Germany to discuss the Ukrainian progress. Zelensky need to show some victory to please his Western backers and continue getting money & weapons. He does not care how many Ukrainian lives will be lost just to grab the headlines.
