All Cheers, FairPrice Xpress stores to charge for plastic bags from Jan 1!!!!!!
#1

SINGAPORE — Supermarket chain NTUC FairPrice will extend its “no plastic bag” initiative to all 167 Cheers and FairPrice Xpress outlets from Jan 1.

This comes as the firm continues the initiative for another year at 24 current FairPrice, Cheers and FairPrice Xpress stores.

FairPrice on Friday (Nov 12) said that customers will have to pay S$0.20 at selected supermarkets and S$0.10 at convenience stores for each transaction.

The initiative started with a month-long pilot in October 2019 before being expanded a month later. It was then extended for another year in 2020.

The aim is to reduce the excessive use of plastic bags and encourage behavioural change in customers, the firm said.

It added that since the initiative started, over 30 million plastic bags have been saved and seven out of 10 customers are now willing to carry along their own bags when they visit the stores.

FairPrice’s announcement was made at a tree planting event attended by Minister of State for National Development Tan Kiat How. The event saw the firm’s charity arm, NTUC FairPrice Foundation, make a S$180,000 contribution to the National Parks Board’s Garden City Fund and OneMillionTrees movement.

Besides the supermarket chain, other retailers that have charged customers for single-use plastic bags include clothing retailers H&M and Uniqlo, as well as health and beauty care chain Watsons.

Give 2/3% discount to Pioneer /Merdeka/Senior citizen then take back 20 cents per bag.  Who benefits NTUC or PMSG?

It's about time!
Singapore is lagging behind many countries on this.

I totally support this look at the number of plastic bags people use and they never bring their own bags ....and refuse to change this bad habit.

Just being your own bag if you want to save the 20cts it's that simple.

Plastic bag can be reused as rubbish bag. Otherwise rubbish would be thrown direct into chute creating a bigger mess.

If really concern of the carbon footprint, then ban firework during NDP and also cut the number of rehearsal. That would truly reduce wastage, taxpayers money and environmentally friendly.

Stop building road and stop building concrete building also can help reduce carbon footprint tremendously? Thinking

There are 10,000 causes.
You only reduce 100 causes... it is no meaning at all.

many people reuse those plastic bags as trash bag. if they refuse to provide plastics bag, people may buy plastics bag outside to throw their trash... in the end not much difference

I think this issue relates to bottled mineral water that use the most plastic. Just bring your own reusable water bottle instead of buying mineral water.

They are always finding excuse to tax and make money from the poor. To the rich, what is 20c and may even pay for 10 plastic bags. Such policy is just regressive. We should buy from other supermarkets that are not charging.

Dun understand why they dun invent an environmentally friendly bag instead of profiteering from dis self-defeatist movement. How to dispose of trash lidat? So garbagemen expect us to pay for unused plastic bags whose sole purpose is to contain our garbage for disposal ie we r buying something to throw away-- iz dat not a reprehensible waste of earth materials?

Oso now pandemic, everyday hospitals dispose tons of plastic ppe. Is there any logic in garbagemen's stupiak anti-plastic movement or not? This generation of papayas are so far proving to be the stupiakest ever in tandem with their world highest paychecks.

In theory the lesser use of plastic bags is good for climate change and global warming, but think again, how do we dispose of our 'wet'  rubbish...? crying

Yes, most of the plastic bag are recycle into trash bag. At least 2 uses rather than buying trash bag which is only for single use.

Plastic bags make up less than 1% of plastic waste...

If NTUC is really keen about the environment, issue paper bags. Plastic bags can double up as trash bags at home. Unless of course they also want to sell you trash bags instead of you getting foc from them.

They always practise double standard.
This side tells you to reduce plastic bag usage, otherside, they still dont control plastic bottles usage and Stop using 1x disposable plastic bottle.
The plastic bag, normally we dont throw away immediately.
Will use them as thrash bag. Only some kuku ppl will throw them away immediately.

Over population is another killer to Climate Change.
More human activities more carbon footprints.
Stop importing.
Keep population below 5 million ppl.

The best way to stop and minimise carbon footprint is to change our life style.
