Threatened with Arrest, Putin Won't Attend BRICS Summit in South Africa
#1

The potential presence of Putin is a complicated diplomatic issue for South Africa, because the Kremlin leader's name is included in an arrest warrant by the International Criminal Court (ICC). South Africa as a member state of the ICC is expected to implement the warrant if Putin sets foot in South Africa.

South Africa is the current chair of the BRICS group which is home to heavyweights including Brazil, Russia, India and China. They see their group as a counterbalance to Western economic dominance. Putin was officially invited to the BRICS Summit in Johannesburg on 22-24 August 2023, but South Africa has come under heavy domestic and international pressure not to accept his arrival.
