That figure for Singapore is before government taxes and transfers lah. It is only 0.37 in 2023 once those are added which is a more accurate reflection of reality.
The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) estimates that the Gini coefficient in the U.S. in 2016 ranged from 0.595, before accounting for any forms of taxes and transfers, to 0.423, after a full accounting of taxes and transfers. It has gotten worse since.
And different institutions come up with different gini figures for the countries. For example, World Bank will give another figure different from CBO.
And it can be different when measured based on different items. For example, US household Income: The Gini coefficient for all US households was 0.49 in 2023. US Individual Earnings: The income distribution Gini-coefficient of individual earnings for full-time, year-round workers was 0.42 in 2023.
