Cluster bombs: Unease grows over US sending cluster bombs to Ukraine

Several allies of the US have expressed unease at Washington's decision to supply Ukraine with cluster bombs.

On Friday, the US confirmed it was sending the controversial weapons to Ukraine, with President Joe Biden calling it a "very difficult decision".

In response, the UK, Canada, New Zealand and Spain all said they were opposed to the use of the weapons.

Cluster bombs have been banned by more than 100 countries because of the danger they pose to civilians.

They typically release lots of smaller bomblets that can kill indiscriminately over a wide area.

The munitions have also caused controversy over their failure - or dud - rate. Unexploded bomblets can linger on the ground for years and then indiscriminately detonate.

Balance of firepower through heavy weaponry might be shifting in the Russian war on Ukraine for the first time in more than 17 months of conflict, as Moscow depletes its stocks while West replenishes Kyiv’s.

Data and assessments by the Kiel Institute for the World Economy (IfW) and the global research institute International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) showed a narrowing in the gaps between the inventory stocks between Russia and Ukraine.

A Ukrainian soldier drags himself through the long grass, one leg trailing limply behind him. Seconds later, a flash of bright orange and a cloud of white smoke mark the spot, just a few metres away, where yet another land mine has been triggered

The Russian TOS-1A thermobaric MLRS (Multiple Launch Rocket System) is now used by the Ukrainian soldiers to hit Russian positions outside of Tors'ke, Donetsk Oblast.

According to open-source information, the Russian army will have already lost six TOS-1A of which three would have been captured by the Ukrainian forces.

The TOS-1A, nicknamed "Solntsepyok" (or Sunheat), is a Russian-made heavy flamethrower system that's considered one of the deadliest weapons due to its power and method of operation.

This system, however, doesn't operate like a traditional flamethrower. Instead, it employs thermobaric and incendiary rockets, firing them from a launcher mounted on a T-72 tank chassis.

The term "thermobaric" refers to the type of explosive used in the rockets, which upon detonation produces an intense fireball followed by a blast wave. This makes the TOS-1A particularly effective when targeting enemy personnel in fortified locations or open terrain.

The lethal capacity of the TOS-1A lies in its ability to fire 220mm rockets from 24 launch tubes, unleashing a barrage of destruction. The thermobaric effect of rockets is incredibly destructive, especially in confined spaces like bunkers or urban environments. The ensuing blast wave and heat from the detonation can cause massive destruction, far exceeding the destructive power of conventional explosives.

The TOS-1A "Solntsepyok" has a firing range that varies depending on the type of rocket used. Generally, it has a minimum firing range of approximately 600 meters and a maximum range of around 6,000 meters (6 kilometers).

US official on timing of cluster munitions' use in Ukraine: Russia will be "the first to know"
From CNN's Alex Marquardt

US-supplied cluster munitions got into Ukraine so quickly because they were already prepositioned in Europe, a US official told CNN.

Now that the munitions are in Ukraine, when will they be used? “We’ve made a decision to let the Russians be the first to know,” the official said.

The Pentagon confirmed Thursday the weapons were in Ukraine, after a Ukrainian commander told CNN

Ukraine's Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov announced on July 11 that the "fighter jet coalition" has been officially formed during the NATO Vilnius summit.

In particular, he highlighted the role of the Dutch and Danish partners, adding that training will start as early as August and a training hub will be set up in Romania.

In May, allies agreed to build the coalition to help procure the U.S.-built F-16 jets for Ukraine and train Ukrainian fighter pilots.

Ukraine has received Soviet-era MiG-29 fighter jets from Poland and Slovakia.

But the Russians reports of multiple S-200 attacks are accurate, that implies that they are being systematically used in a land-attack role be Ukraine, it’s more surprising for Ukrainians to expend air defense missiles on land attack missions than for Russia... Tongue

European Pravda

Ukraine has failed to achieve its maximum plan at the NATO summit in Vilnius – a political invitation to join NATO that would open the doors for the accession process after the war. It was specifically about a political invitation, not a formal invitation to begin the accession process. However, Ukraine has successfully achieved the minimum plan, mentioned in the article by Director of the Center for New Europe, "Minimum Programme in Vilnius": "What Ukraine Gained from the NATO Summit and What Needs to Be Done Next."
