I had more luck keeping guppies and tetras together since they’re peaceful. I avoid mixing aggressive ones like cichlids unless I’ve got a big tank with lots of hiding spots.

I had similar issues before and adding more plants helped a lot. I used java fern since it's easy to grow and doesn’t need much light or CO2.
