China has ordered areas with populations of more than 5 million to be fully tested for Covid-19 within three days, while those with less than 5 million residents have two days to do the same.
The National Health Commission notice on Tuesday came as the country recorded the highest daily totals of local and symptomatic cases during its latest coronavirus outbreak.
Tianjin, meanwhile, has upgraded its quarantine policy, so that individuals arriving from Nanjing and Yangzhou, as well as another hotspot, Zhangjiajie in Hunan province, will be subject to centralised rather than home quarantine.
And the Rolex Shanghai Masters, an annual professional men’s tennis tournament typically held in Shanghai in October, has become the latest sporting event to be cancelled in China. The organisers announced that the tournament would not be held this year as part of Covid-19 precautionary measures.
