SYDNEY (AFP) - Australia planned to acquire US nuclear-powered submarines over their rival British vessels, the former defence minister said Thursday (June 9), revealing usually secretive deliberations on the multi-billion dollar deal.

Mr Peter Dutton said he had planned to buy two Virginia-class submarines from the United States by 2030 and build another eight to bring the total fleet strength to 10.

......

The choice of contractor - Britain or the US - will have a significant economic impact and would closely immesh the Australian navy with that of the winning nation.

After buying, where can Australia get the nuclear power?

The nuclear reactor comes with the submarine. The "fuel", which is uranium, can last a long time. Energy from uranium compared to coal of the same weight is about 3 million times more.

A nuclear-powered submarine is required by Australia if it wants to move them near China instead of defending its own waters because it takes days for the submarines just to reach China and nuclear-powered submarines can remain submerged much longer than conventional ones. Conventional submarines can only be used by Australia for defensive pruposes instead of moving into China's waters.
