Agree - everyone knows the US is very divided today  - be it Socially, Politically, Culturally, Racially, Rich vs Poor, Left vs Rght, liberal vs Conservatives, 1% vs 99% etc + Biden wanna run for re-election in 2024. From the Chinese POV, US is just another power that they know and understand very well....

If u understand your opponent weaknesses and strength. you will have far more leverage by exploiting just a few pain point without wasting too much energy and time...E.g. using trade and commerce to achieve closure US-China inter-dependence....After all, the Chinese had been a long-term geopolitical player since the ancient time...

So guess which side is more desperate to have that meeting before the CNY ?
