"The Russians were waiting for us," he explained. "They fired anti-tank weapons and grenade launchers at us. My vehicle drove over an anti-tank mine, but everything was OK, the vehicle took the hit, and everyone was alive."

'Almost mission impossible'

The commander, who went by his battle callsign Voskres, gave chilling details of an attack in which his special forces-trained troops engaged. They were tasked with taking over fortified Russian positions, only to be drawn into a death trap they could not have anticipated and which caused them heavy casualties: remotely detonated mines placed in empty trenches.

Their mission got off to a bad start. Their armor was knocked out by artillery, so the soldiers were forced to advance on foot.

" The trenches were mined. Our guys started jumping into the trenches and jumping into the air ," he told the NYT. Moreover, simultaneously with the remote detonation of mines placed in the trenches , the enemies launched explosive charges from drones on the survivors.

“It looked like they had one drone for each person. If we had known how much equipment the Russians had, then we would have realized that it would have been an almost impossible mission ," explained this commander.

The Russians intentionally leave some of the trenches empty, and when the Ukrainians try to take them over, they blow them up.
