Actually I agree with the person on some fronts. Parents owe it to the children to provide them with shelter, food and where possible opportunities of learning so that they can grow up in a protected and engaged environment. It is the parent's duty.

Kids have freedom of choice of what they do with their lives. Kids are not to be dictated by parents. Parents can guide and suggest but when the kids are old enough to decide they should be given their right to do so. Just be sure that whomever made the decision has to bear all the consequences and responsibilities. (Just like you decided to have a child and so you give the necessary stuff and opportunities for the child wellbeing.)

Whether the kid in return reciprocates or not is not something the parents can demand or control.

Once the child is 18yo, kick them out.
