India’s rice export ban will drive up global prices, even if other countries such as Thailand and Vietnam step in. As rice is a major staple, countries that are relatively low and middle-income will also be hit badly. India’s ban coincides with a separate political issue in the Black Sea region that affects wheat, another major staple, along with the developing El Nino phenomenon, which tends to impact India and other Southeast Asian rice-producing countries.
