I am someone who grew up with inferior complexity and growing up poor is crippling. The saving grace is that during those days there are more poor than affluents. The disparity is even greater today. My son's classmates only a couple staying in HDB with the rest in private housing. Most of his peers travelled around the world before they reached psle age...

I don't think anyone should be ashamed of their parents whatever their job may be. Likewise there is no need to be shameful for poor living conditions. What is more important is that you make the best use of your time and opportunities and get ahead and acquire better living conditions for yourself and your dependents.
