Calvin Cheng calls for empathy in GST debate, criticizes pro-PAP commentators

In a surprising turn, former NMP Calvin Cheng, known for his establishment leanings, criticized pro-PAP commentators for lacking empathy in the GST debate. While acknowledging the necessity of tax hikes, Cheng sided with Pritam Singh’s call for sensitivity, signaling a shift in establishment rhetoric amid rising public frustration.

This is what the textbook says.

LW, please read...

How GST Can Contribute to Price Increases:

* Initial Price Spike:
When a GST is introduced or increased, businesses often pass the added cost onto consumers, leading to a one-time increase in prices. This can be seen as a short-term inflationary effect.

* Cost-Push Inflation:
By increasing the cost of goods and services, a GST can contribute to cost-push inflation, where rising production costs lead to higher prices.
