Two cheerleaders have been shot in a Texas carpark after opening the wrong car door.
The shooting was the third time in a week that young people have become victims of gun crime after making an innocent mistake.
A group of four cheerleaders, who had carpooled, were travelling back from practice in Austin when they pulled into a car park to pick up their own vehicles.
Heather Roth, one of the cheerleaders, opened the door of what she thought was her car, only to find a man in the passenger seat.
Realising her mistake, she climbed into her own car.

“I see the guy get out of the passenger door, and I rolled my window down, and I was trying to apologise to him,” she told CNN.
“And then halfway, my window was down, and he just threw his hands up, and then he pulled out a gun and he just started shooting at all of us.”

Two of the cheerleaders were shot, one was treated at the scene and the other, Payton Washington, was airlifted to hospital where she was reportedly in a critical condition.

The incident took place a matter of days after a black teenager, Ralph Yarl, was shot in the head after knocking on the wrong door in Kansas City.

In upstate New York, Kaylin Gillis, 20, was shot dead after the car in which she was riding turned into the wrong driveway.
